Program on ‘Downton’ fashions

Staff report

WARREN

The Sutliff Museum will present “Fashions of the Downton Abbey Era” at 10 a.m. June 7 in the Thomas Meeting Room of the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library, 444 Mahoning Ave. NW.

Sara Hume, curator of the Kent State University Fashion Museum, will present the lecture on the kinds of clothing worn in early 20th century England by wealthy, upper-class members of society. Her talk will be enhanced by photographs of styles of that era taken from the Fashion Museum’s collection of more than 30,000 garments and accessories.

Hume holds a bachelor’s degree in graphic design from Yale University, a master’s degree in museum studies: costume and textiles from the Fashion Institute of Technology, and a doctorate in modern European history from the University of Chicago. She lives in Kent and is an assistant professor at Kent State University.

Coffee and pastries will be served at 10 a.m., and there will be time for questions and answers after Hume’s talk.

The Sutliff Museum, next door to the Thomas Meeting Room, will be open for visiting both before and after the program.

There is no admission charge for the program but reservations are required as the Thomas Room seating is limited to 100. Call 330-395-6575 to reserve a seat. Deadline is June 2.

The Warren Library Association operates the Sutliff Museum as a memorial to Levi and Phebe Sutliff, who were involved with the Underground Railroad in the mid-1800s.

Hours are 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and tours may be arranged at other times by calling 330-395-6575 or emailing info@sutliffmuseum.org. The building is fully handicapped-accessible, and admission to the museum is free.
