Penguins prepare for tourney as sixth seed

The Youngstown State baseball team will be the No. 6 seed in the 2014 Horizon League Tournament that begins on Wednesday at Kapco Park in Mequon, Wis.

The Penguins, which finished the regular season with a 12-36 overall record and a 6-17 mark in Horizon League play, will play the third-seeded Valparaiso Crusaders at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

The fourth seed, and host Milwaukee Panthers, will open the tournament at noon against the fifth-seeded Oakland Golden Grizzlies. Wright State won the regular season crown with a 25-4 league mark and will be the tournament’s top seed.

If YSU defeats Valparaiso on Wednesday, it will play Wright State on Thursday at 8 p.m. A loss in the opening round would put YSU in an elimination game on Thursday at noon.

YSU softball adds more postseason hardware

The Youngstown State softball team picked up more postseason awards following its 30-win season.

Collegesportsmadness.com named Miranda Castiglione the Field Player of the Year, Casey Crozier Pitcher of the Year, and Sarah Dowd Freshman of the Year. Also senior Samantha Snodgrass was named to the Horizon League All-Tournament Team.

Castiglione, Crozer and utility player Sarah Ingalls were named to the website’s All-Horizon League First-Team. Dowd and senior Courtney Ewing were second-team selections.

Castilgione, the 2014 Horizon League Co-Player of the Year and NFCA All-Midwest Region Second-Team selection, finished the season with a .395 batting average, 10 doubles, 10 home runs and a school-record 43 runs scored.

Local tennis players set for Division I tourney

OBERLIN

The boys Northeast Ohio Division I district tennis tournament is this Thursday through Sunday at Oberlin College.

Boardman’s Donovan Barrett earned the Canton No. 2 seed and will play Eric Schuette of St. Ignatius, the Oberlin No. 3 seed. In doubles, William Brown and Nicholas Debiec of Canfield are the Canton No. 4 seed. They will play Eric Goldberg and Dillon O’Brien of Solon, who earned the Solon No. 1 seed.

Penn-Ohio Blue Storm win AAU Invitational

Elizabeth, pa.

The 10th grade Penn-Ohio Blue Storm boys AAU basketball team went undefeated and won its championship last weekend at Court Time Sports Center in Elizabeth, Pa.

In a thrilling 71-70 victory over Varsity Team from Toronto, the local Penn-Ohio team won the the Court Time Invitational.

The 8th grade Penn-Ohio Blue Storm girls team were also victorious in its tournament championship game.

North Coast Bass announces tour dates

Erie, PA

The Erie Sports Commission announced the dates for this year’s North Coast Bass Anglers Tournaments on Monday.

The tournament series, formerly known as the Great Lakes Largemouth Series, will hold Open Tournaments on Sunday, June 29 and Sunday, July 20. Member Tournaments will follow on August 10; August 24; September 7; and September 21.

The tournament has expanded this year to include smallmouth bass, and all events will be held at Presque Isle State Park.

NBA charges Sterling, sets up June 3 hearing

The NBA has initiated a charge against Donald Sterling, setting up a June 3 hearing after which owners could vote to terminate his ownership of the Los Angeles Clippers.

The charge Monday asserts that Sterling has damaged the NBA and its teams, disparaged African-Americans and that he his actions “significantly undermine the NBA’s efforts to promote diversity and inclusion.”
