A man is facing traffic citations and a possible criminal charge after he drove his Dodge Avenger over the curb and sheered off the bottom of a utility pole on Market Street at LaClede Avenue on the city’s South Side a little after 6 p.m. Monday.

Witnesses said the driver, a male, was arguing with a female passenger at the time of the accident. After the car ran into the pole, the woman got out dazed and disoriented and ran away. Police looked for her but could not locate her.

The driver was placed in the back of a police car for questioning. A police officer found a hypodermic needle in the Avenger. The driver, who was not identified, will be cited, the officer said.

A tow truck was unable to move the car from the road until Ohio Edison workers came to the scene to remove the power pole, which had been pushed off its foundation and into Market, still attached to the wires above.
