Tayala stars for Kent in MAC championships

ATHENS

Matthias Tayala from McDonald was named co-Most Valuable Performer in the Mid-American Conference outdoor track and field championships Saturday at Ohio University. The junior won the hammer throw, finished second in the discus and fourth in the shot put for 23 points, tying Taylor Brown of Eastern Michigan. Tayala helped the Golden Flashes to a third-place finish.

Fellow junior Miles Dunlap, also from McDonald, set a school record with a 46.59 clocking in a second-place finish in the 400, finished second in the 400-meter hurdles and also ran a leg on the third-place 4x400 relay team.

The Kent State women won the MAC title with the help of senior Joh’vonnie Mosley, also from McDonald, who finished second in the shot put and fifth in the discus.

Carpenter wins 2nd straight Indy 500 pole

INDIANAPOLIS

Local driver Ed Carpenter has made himself at home on the Indianapolis 500 pole. The last of nine qualifiers to take the track, Carpenter bumped James Hinchcliffe from the top spot, posting a four-lap average of 231.067 mph to win the 500 pole for the second straight year.

Carpenter’s No. 20 Chevrolet was the car to beat all weekend, and the hometown favorite showed no signs of rust in his first IndyCar Series race of the season.

Hinchcliffe will start second after sustaining a concussion last weekend in the Grand Prix of Indianapolis. Will Power will join them on the front row. Three-time Indy 500 champion Helio Castroneves was fourth followed by Simon Pagenaud and Marco Andretti. Carlos Munoz, Josef Newgarden and J.R. Hildebrand will be on the third row.

Carpenter, the stepson of former speedway executive Tony George, was 10th in last year’s Indy 500. He is the 11th driver to earn consecutive 500 poles and the first since Castroneves in 2009-10.

Group schedules first summer tennis tourney

The Trumbull County Tennis Association’s first summer tournament for 2014 is the Seven Seventeen Credit Union tournament in memory of Keith Vens scheduled July 4-9 at Packard Park.

Teammates join St. Louis for mom’s funeral

LAVAL, Quebec

New York Rangers coaches and players joined star forward Martin St. Louis at his mother’s funeral outside Montreal on Sunday. His mother, France St. Louis, died suddenly three days before Mother’s Day in the middle of the Rangers’ series against the Pittsburgh Penguins. She was 63. St. Louis didn’t miss a game and provided a lift to his teammates as they battled back from a 3-1 deficit to win the series.

Then the Rangers beat the Montreal Canadiens 7-2 on Saturday in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference final, with St. Louis scoring the opening goal early in the first period. The series resumes tonight in Montreal.

Babe’s watch sold for more than $650,000

LOS ANGELES

A gold pocket watch owned by Babe Ruth has sold for $650,108 at an auction in Southern California. SCP Auctions said Sunday that the watch was from the 25th anniversary celebration in 1948 of the opening of Yankee Stadium. SCP says other top sales include a 1965 Sandy Koufax-autographed L.A. Dodgers home jersey worn in a game that fetched $268,664. The auction house says Satchel Paige’s 1971 National Baseball Hall of Fame induction ring set a world record for a baseball-related ring, selling for $259,642. More than 1,000 sports memorabilia items were sold Sunday for a total of $4.5 million.
