Spam to be used to lure invasive, big-headed ants

COSTA MESA, Calif.

California agriculture officials are on the hunt for an invasive species of ant that’s been spotted in an Orange County yard — and they’ll use Spam as bait.

The Orange County Register reported that 1,570 bait stations were to be set up recently in seven Orange County cities.

The ants love the fatty, oily food.

An amateur bug-lover spotted a colony last month in a Costa Mesa yard and agriculture officials have been trying to determine if there are other colonies.

The species is native to Africa and has a huge head. If it spreads in California, it could threaten the state’s agriculture. The ants aren’t dangerous to humans.

Officials were to try to get approval from property owners before placing the bait stations in front yards.

Man says he broke into neighbor’s home for eggs

MIDDLETOWN, Pa.

A southeastern Pennsylvania man charged with breaking into a neighbor’s house says he was only borrowing eggs to make breakfast.

The Bucks County Courier Times said Middletown police contend Christopher King didn’t have an omelette on his mind when he climbed through the window Tuesday morning.

Police who responded to the report of a burglary in progress say they arrived to find him walking out the front door. They say they found dresser and cabinet drawers and doors open throughout the house.

Detective Patrick Nicastro says King claimed he climbed through his neighbor’s window because he wanted some eggs for breakfast.

The homeowner told police that nothing appeared to be missing.

King is charged with felony burglary and related charges. Online court documents don’t list an attorney for him.

Students stuck in Philly elevator after prom

PHILADELPHIA

Police say about a dozen students got stuck in a downtown Philadelphia elevator for more than an hour after their prom.

WPVI-TV reported that the students from Bryn Mawr’s Shipley School held their prom on the 52nd floor of one of the city’s tallest buildings May 10.

They were at the Pyramid Club in the building known as 9 Penn Center in Center City.

The students were on their way down and out of the building when the elevator got stuck between the 31st and 32nd floors.

Police say a crew was called in to fix the elevator and free the students. They got stuck just before midnight. Nobody was hurt.
