White-Shanks wedding set for June 8

The parents of Dr. John Shanks and Sarah Cathryn White, both of Northport, Ala., are announcing the couple’s engagement. Her parents are Richard and Sarah White of Bessemer, Ala., and his parents are Edward and Sharon Shanks of Boardman.

Invitations have been issued for an afternoon wedding and reception June 8 at Aldridge Botanical Gardens in Birmingham, Ala. Invitations also have been issued for a local reception, which will take place June 21 at Scholl Pavilion in Mill Creek Park.

The bride-elect received a bachelor’s degree in music from the University of Alabama. She is a flutist and teaches flute at Scrollworks in Birmingham, is an elementary music teacher for Tuscaloosa’s One Place and is an assistant at the University of Alabama Community Music School.

Her fiancé received a music performance degree from Youngstown State University, a master’s degree in music from Indiana University and a doctorate in musical arts from the University of Alabama. He is principal trombone at the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra and instructs trombone at Jackson State University in Jackson, Miss.
