Scrappers, library push reading skills

LEETONIA

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers have teamed up with the Leetonia Community Public Library, 181 Walnut St., to help children practice their reading skills.

The Scrappers Reading Club is encouraging children to visit the library and pick out five books and a Scrappers bookmark.

Record the titles you read and redeem the bookmark for two tickets to a 2014 Scrappers game and a T-shirt.

Crash course teaches French

A one-time crash course in French will help those who are planning vacations to a French-speaking place, such as France, Canada or the Caribbean.

The 90-minute course will cover such topics as greetings, ordering food, asking for help and directions, and more.

Nissen Gallery puts 85 works on display

The Nissen Gallery, first floor of Trumbull Memorial Hospital, 1150 W. Market St., will display 85 works of art through June 17.

“Black & White Show” features works by 34 artists, all members of Trumbull Area Artists. Most works are for sale; prices range from $20 to $500.

Best of show and artistic recognition prizes will be awarded.

Karen Fry, TAA director, curated and coordinated the show with help from James Hardy and Kathryn Infante.

Learning institute will offer class

YOUNGSTOWN

The Mahoning Valley Lifelong Learning Institute will feature a two-hour class “Practices of Remembrance: Now and Then” at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Park Vista Gathering Room, 1216 Fifth Ave.

The class will be taught by Lauren Walsh, who teaches at New York University and The New School, and it will focus on the inner workings of memory. Walsh will specifically address how the Holocaust and 9/11 have been remembered and memorialized.

TNR will host spay, neuter clinic

WARREN

TNR of Warren is hosting a spay and neuter clinic for cats May 24 and 25 at Tractor Supply, 3800 Elm Road. The clinic will include pets, strays, feral and barn cats.

Dahlia sale planned

YOUNGSTOWN

Mahoning Valley Dahlia Society is preparing for its annual plant sale, which will be May 25 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. or until sold out at Fellows Riverside Gardens, 123 McKinley Ave.

Local dahlia growers will provide a variety of dahlia plants in a choice of colors and sizes.

Society members will assist in plant selections and answer questions regarding garden preparations and care for the dahlias.

Animal communicator will visit Puptown

AUSTINTOWN

Doris Straka, animal communicator, will visit Puptown Pantry in Austintown from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 31 for a one-day reading event.

Each session may include more than one animal.

Special Puptown rates are $25 for 15 minutes and $45 for 30 minutes.
