Boardman boys second at Federal meet

Staff report

CANTON

Boardman senior Mark Hadley broke two meet records and one stadium record, helping the Spartans finish second to host GlenOak 152-143 in Friday’s Federal League track and field championships.

Hadley, who won a Division I state cross country title last fall, set meet and stadium records in the 1600-meter run with a time of 4:17.19. GlenOak’s Paul Knott set the previous mark of 4:19.10 in 1979, while Boardman’s Sam Deskin set the stadium record (4:20.19) in 2009.

In the 3200, Hadley ran 9:25.35 to break his own meet record of 9:28.01, set last season. He fell just short of his own stadium record (9:25.15), which he also set last year.

Hadley’s time of 1:57.06 in the 800 would have set a stadium record, but he placed second to Perry senior Tristan Williams (1:55.46), who eclipsed GlenOak’s Chris Noussias (1:57.40 stadium record in 2009) and nearly broke the meet record of 1:55.33 set by Hoover’s Brandon Raguth in 2001.

Boardman senior Brian Bodrick won the 100 and 200 and helped the Spartans win the 4x100 and finish third in the 4x200. Senior Turel Thompson ran on both those relays, won the long jump and placed third in the 100.

In girls action, Boardman sophomore Arianna Cuevas placed second in the 200, third in the 100 and helped the Spartans win the 4x200 relay and place third in the 4x100 relay. Boardman placed third in the team standings with 113 points, while GlenOak had 169 and Hoover 140.

Because Boardman went 6-1 in dual meets, the Spartans finish tied with Hoover as runner-up in the final league standings.
