Class of 1984 reunion

The Austintown Fitch Class of 1984 30-year Class Reunion will take place on July 12 from 7-11 p.m. at the Maronite Center, located at 1555 S. Meridian Road in Youngstown.

Youngstown Torch Club to meet

The Youngstown Torch Club will meet May 19 on the campus of Youngstown State University in Kilcawley Center, in Bresnahan Rooms 1 and 2. The guest speaker will be Michelle O’Brien whose topic will be “Yoga: Holistic Health Methods for Those Healing from Pathological Relationships.” Social hour begins at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 6 p.m. Call 330-757-4148 for reservations.

Youngstown Shrine Club to host dinner

The Youngstown Shrine Club will host a fish fry dinner May 23 from 3-7 p.m. at its indoor banquet hall. The dinner includes fish, coleslaw, french fries, macaroni and cheese, rolls and a beverage. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children. Children under ten are free. The Youngstown Shrine Club is located at 1735 W. South Range Road Route 165 in North Lima. The public is encouraged to attend. Tickets can be purchased at the door and carry-out meals are also available.

Baby Bargain Boutique set for June 7

Boardman Park will be having its annual Baby Bargain Boutique on June 7 at the Masters Pavilion from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Admission is free with a non-perishable food item donation for Second Harvest Food Bank. The Baby Bargain Boutique allows families to purchase good usable baby, children and maternity clothing, toys, books furniture and much more for children under the age of eight.

For those who have items to sell, reservations for table rentals start May 7 for Boardman residents and May 8 for non-residents. Table reservations can only be made at the park office from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Indoor and outdoor spots are available. The price for Boardman residents is $20 for inside and $15 for outside. The price for non-residents is $25 for inside and $20 for outside. Outside spots must bring their own table and may use a pop-up tent.

Boardman Park to offer Adventure Camp

Register online for Boardman Park Adventure Camp at www.boardmanparkcamp.com. You will create your own account where you sign up for your preferred weeks and track your payments. Discounts will be given for early bird enrollment if paid by June 6. Boardman resident and multi-sibling family discounts will be offered when application is completed.

The camp will take place June 16 through August 15. Camp hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. for children who have completed kindergarten and up to 12 years old. Arrangements can be made if you need to bring campers early or pick them up later. In addition to experiencing the outdoors, the children will benefit from arts and crafts, team building, creative arts, science and sports.

The goal of the camp is to offer young minds the opportunity to explore their imagination, discover physical fitness, expand their knowledge of sports and develop a growing sense of adventure through diverse activities.

Memorial Mile run to be May 26

The 24th annual Memorial Mile running road race will take place on May 26 at 9:35 a.m. in Boardman. Some of the best runners in the area will compete for gift certificates and awards in 14 age groups.

Runners ages 11 and under are free with pre-registration by May 19. The entry fee is $8 in advance for all others and $10 day of race for everyone. The race starts at Routes 224 and 7. Day of race registration and packets can be picked up at Walgreens at Route 224 and Route 7.

Monday Night Writers meeting scheduled for May 19

Area writers, both published and unpublished, are invited to attend the next meeting of Monday Night Writers, to take place May 19 from 6-8 p.m. at Peaberry’s Caf , located 4350 Boardman-Canfield Road. Led by author and professional writer Nancy Christie, the two-hour sessions include a mix of writing exercises, information on the creative and business aspects of writing, and group feedback on ‘works-in-progress.’ The fee is $10 per class and registration is preferred. Poland resident graduates Cum Laude

Adam Valko of Poland recently graduated Cum Laude from the University of Dayton with a Bachelor of Science in Education and Health Sciences degree in Sport Management.

Best to present senior cabaret piece

On May 23, Brittany Mae Best of Poland, a senior at Boardman High School, will present her senior cabaret piece titled “Almost There” as a pre-conservatory student with the Liz Rubino Studios Ohio troupe at the Amvets Hall in Struthers at 7 p.m. The event is free to the public with doors opening at 6:30 p.m.

The show was conceived by Best and will be directed by Liz Rubino as well as music direction by Jack Ciarniello.

Senior Club to meet

The Holy Family Senior Club will meet on May 19 at 11:30 a.m. at Holy Family Parish Hall, located at 2729 Center Road in Poland. Club members will enjoy a catered lunch this month with no charge for members; the cost for guests is $12 per person. Annual membership dues ($10) must be paid prior to this luncheon.

Historical society to meet

The Poland Historical Society will host its May meeting at the Struthers Historical Society and Museum on May 20 at 6:30 p.m. Following the meeting, members of the Poland Historical Society will enjoy a tour of the Struthers Museum.

The Struthers Historical Society’s building is located at 50 Terrace Dr. with parking available at the Struthers City Hall. The Struthers Historical Society plans to have an open house later this summer to give the public an opportunity to visit.

Fish dinner Fridays

American Legion Post 737, located at 16465 Milton Ave. in Lake Milton, will serve all-you-can-eat fried fish with french fries or macaroni and cheese, coleslaw, rolls and beverage on Fridays from 3-7 p.m. Chicken or shrimp is also available. Each meal is $8.50 for adults, $5 for children under 12 and free for those age 3 and under. A fish sandwich with fries and coleslaw is $7. For carry outs, call 330-654-5630. Spring for Life fundraiser

Right to Life of Mahoning County is sponsoring a Spring for Life fundraiser dinner May 27 at the Georgetown, located at 5945 South Avenue in Boardman. Guest speakers for the evening will be Rev. Walter S. Moss, Pastor of Foursquare Church in Canton and author of “Why I Am a Black Pro-life Pastor,” and Father Greg Maturi, Pastor of St. Dominic’s Church. Rummage sale May 17

Struthers Parkside Church will be hosting a rummage sale on May 17 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at 110 Poland Ave. There will be a variety of items for sale, including toys, books, household items and more. There will also be some specialty items for sale, such as jewelry, crocheted items, Mary Kay and Scentsy candles. Lunch will be sold and a bake sale will be offered.

Other events at the sale include a raffle basket drawing. Proceeds from the sale will go toward the church’s youth group for their summer mission trip.

Slavic committee seeking applicants

The Simply Slavic committee has announced that is seeking applicants for its academic scholarship. Undergraduate YSU students who have completed their freshman year and are currently enrolled at YSU are encouraged to apply for the $500 scholarship. All applicants are required to submit a 500 word essay on how being Slavic affects their life. Applicants must also substantiate their Slavic lineage.

A panel made up of the Simply Slavic organizing committee will select the winners after reviewing the essays, overall academic achievement, faculty recommendations, and involvement in their culture. The deadline for scholarship applicants is May 23. The winners will be announced at the group’s fourth annual festival June 21 from noon until 11 p.m. on Federal Plaza East.

Rust Belt Theater to present “Can You Hear Me?”

The Rust Belt Theater Company will present “Can You Hear Me?,” a dark comedy written and directed by Brian Lee on May 10, 16 and 17 at 8 p.m. Starring husband and wife acting duo Craig and Liz Conrad, the play centers on an unconventional love story that takes place between two people in adjoining prison cells who build a relationship without ever laying eyes on each other. Brian Lee has been involved with community theater for 30 years. He has written five plays. “Can You Hear Me?” was awarded Best Original Script at the Ohio AACTfest. His play “Nightlight” won the OCTA Playwright award. Last year, he was honored with a Marquee Award for Best Original Script for Family Reunion, a play that also had its Youngstown debut at the Rust Belt Theater Company. Support group to host indoor picnic

The Mahoning Valley Fibromyalgia Support Group will finish this season’s monthly meetings May 21 with an indoor picnic for members and their families. Main dishes and table service will be provided. Everyone is asked to bring a side dish or dessert to share and their own beverage. The picnic will take place at Bethel Lutheran Church, located at 425 Crestview Drive in Boardman at 7 p.m. All past speakers are invited as guests. The next regularly scheduled meeting will be Sept. 17. There will be no meetings in June, July or Aug.

Join the Poland library May 20 and 27 at 1 p.m. for developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Proper flag disposal

During the month of May, Shepherd of the Valley is taking in tired, torn and faded American flags that need to be retired. Most flags are not retired and burned with the ceremony they deserve. Some are burned in a barrel; some in a pile on the ground; others are cremated at a funeral home. Shepherd of the Valley wants to change this. Flags can be dropped off at any Shepherd of the Valley community between 8:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily. Drop-off hours for the corporate offices are 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. Flags will be delivered to a local veteran’s group for proper disposal. Spring Spectacular Sale and Bazaar

The Poland United Methodist Church, located at 1940 Boardman-Poland Road (Route 224) invites you to their Spring Spectacular Sale and Bazaar Memorial Day weekend May 24. The sale will be open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., with hot food being served all day. There will be vendors, crafts, a 50/50 raffle, raffle baskets and more. This event is sponsored by the Poland Relay for Life.

Poland High School summer concert band

The instrumental music department at Poland Seminary High School is organizing the first annual Poland summer concert band to perform this summer at the Celebrate Poland festival. All residents of Poland are welcome to participate, as well as any PSHS alumni living out of town. The band will be conducted by former PSHS band director, Albert Colella, assisted by current PSHS band director Nicholas Olesko. The music will be sent out one month in advance. Optional rehearsals will take place June 18 from 6-7:30 p.m. and June 25 from 6-7:30 p.m. at McKinley Elementary. Mandatory rehearsal will take place June 27 from 4-6 p.m. at McKinley Elementary. The performance will be June 27 at 8 p.m. at the Poland Village Gazebo. The Ursuline Center announces 2014 guided labyrinth walks

The Ursuline Center, located at 4280 Shields Road, will begin its 2014 guided labyrinth walk season April 27 (weather permitting) with a short presentation on the Spirituality of Labyrinths at 2 p.m. in the center and a guided walk immediately following. This year the center is offering a series of themed walks. On April 27 at 2 p.m., the walk will be “On the Path to Rebirth,” on May 13 at 6:30 p.m. the walk will be “On the Path to Healing,” on June 19 at 6:30 p.m. the walk will be “On the Path to Emancipation: Freedom of Mind, Body and Spirit” in correlation with the Juneteenth holiday, on July 15 at 6:30 p.m., the walk will be “On the Path to Growing,” on Aug. 14 at 6:30 p.m., the walk will be “On the Path to Accepting,” on Sept. 16, 6:30 p.m., the walk will be “On the Path to Peace” and on Oct. 12 at 2 p.m., the walk will be “On the Path to Awareness” (presentation on Spirituality of Labyrinths in the center).

All people of faith are invited to attend, whether they are new to or experienced with walking a labyrinth. Walking the labyrinth usually takes about 20 minutes. People wishing to experience the Labyrinth but unable to make one of the guided walks can come anytime at their own convenience. There are printed guides that give suggestions for following the path provided at the Labyrinth’s entrance, but there is no right or wrong way to experience the sacred walk. People can use the labyrinth in any way they need. The Ursuline Center Labyrinth is a ministry of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown and open year-round from dawn to dusk for all persons of faith. Gamblers Anonymous to meet

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Cornersburg. MetroParks landscape architect Justin Rogers will guide a special trolley trip that will board at Ford Nature Center May 29 from 6-8 p.m. The tour will help you understand and appreciate the historic landscape features and building architecture found within Mill Creek MetroParks. iNaturalist hike

Meet at Ford Nature Center May 18 from 2-4 p.m. to hike around Lake Cohasset to observe wildlife and record observations on a new citizen science project website called iNaturalist.org. This will be an ongoing project to monitor Mill Creek MetroParks’ biodiversity and the public is encouraged to participate. After the hike, there will be a short introduction to the website and a demonstration on how to log observations. Moderate rating, 2.5 miles.

Voices of the night hike

Meet at Vikers Nature Preserve on May 23 from 8:30-10 p.m. to listen to a serenade of frogs. There will also be an opportunity catch, observe and then release frogs. Wear boots and bring flashlights. Easy rating, 1 mile.

Bluebird hike

Meet at MetroParks Farm May 25 from 2-4 p.m. to learn about bluebirds and how their numbers have slowly increased as you hike Bluebird Trail and check some nest boxes. Moderate, 1.5 or 2.5 miles.

Recreational hikes

There will be a series of volunteer-led, recreational hikes. These hikes are generally faster paced and focus on exercising in the outdoors. Meet at Ford Nature Center May 7 at 9 a.m. for a moderate four mile walk. Meet at the Golf Course overflow parking lot (off of West Golf Drive) May 13 at 6 p.m. for an east one or three mile hike. Meet at MetroParks Bikeway Trailhead at MetroPakrs Farm May 21 at 9 a.m. for an easy two or four mile walk. Meet at MetroParks Bikeway Trail Head at Kirk Road May 27 at 6 p.m. for a moderate two or four mile hike.

Banding the baby falcons

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Wildlife hopes to have newly hatched peregrine falcons to band and the public is invited to watch. If you would like to attend this special activity, which will take place downtown on a week day, Ford Nature Center will keep a contact list. As soon as ODNR-DOW gives the details, you will be contacted with the date and time.

Join Marina Perdos from 9:30 until 11 a.m. and Karres Cvetkovich from 5:30 until 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays in May at Fellows Riverside Gardens for yoga. All levels are welcome. Bring a mat and small blanket. The fee is $10 per class.

Down the rabbit hole

Children ages 3-5 who are accompanied by an adult are invited to Fellows Riverside Gardens May 17 from 10-11 a.m. to follow Alice’s white rabbit and learn about his favorite plant and carrots. Queen of Heart’s tarts

Children ages 6-11 who are accompanied by an adult are invited to Fellows Riverside Gardens May 17 from 12:30-1:30 p.m. to learn how to make their own strawberry tarts, sample tarts already made and hear more about the Queen of Hearts and her court. Registration required. There is a $5 fee.

Stroller walk

Come to Ford Nature Center May 24 from 10-10:45 a.m. to learn to connect yourself and your child to nature. Enjoy a short guided walk, a specially designed sensory hike for children in strollers.

Plant spirals

Come to Fellows Riverside Gardens May 31 from 3-4 p.m. to explore spiral patterns, Fibonacci numbers and the Plant Spiral exhibit all the while participating in hands-on activities. Registration required. There is a $5 fee.

Family garden Fridays

Come to Fellows Riverside Gardens Fridays starting May 9 until Oct. 17 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. to take part in drop-in activities in the family garden. Watch as the garden grows with characters from “Alice in Wonderland” and Wonderland-like plants. Learn about garden creatures, tools and how to care for a garden. Take part in making garden treats, listening to stories, children’s yoga and adventuring with Alice and her friends.

Goat day at MetroParks Farm

Join the Mahoning County Goat Club at MetroParks Farm May 18 from 3-5 p.m. as they take over the farm for the afternoon. Learn how these critters are handled, try some goat milk fudge, register for a soap making demonstration or make a special goat craft. Small fee per station.

Enjoy a mid-morning stroll through Fellows Riverside Gardens May 28 from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. as you learn the basics of botany and patterns of plant families. From plant parts to nomenclature and the evolution of plants, discover the intricacies that make plants special. Return to the Davis Center for a seasonal lunch and dessert. Through the Lens exhibit

Come to Fellows Riverside Gardens in the Melnick Museum through December 2014 for the “Through the Lens” exhibit. The exhibit displays a rare collection of glass negatives and acetate film negatives produced by two local photographers which chronicle scenes of Mill Creek Park from 1907-1926. Several portrait negatives of the period also on display.

Garden adventure

Come to Fellows Riverside Gardens June 7 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. for a day of “Alice in Wonderland” adventure in the gardens. Meet the Queen of Hearts, drink tea like the Mad Hatter, join in making music and a variety of hands-on activities with organizations, including Youngstown State University, The Green Team, The Audubon Society and more. Wild With Style Art Show seeking entries

Amateur artists of all ages may submit artwork for display. Entries will be accepted at Ford Nature Center starting May 24 until June 1. Nicotine Anonymous to meet on Wednesdays

Nicotine Anonymous is a fellowship of individuals from every walk of life who meets every Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Wickliffe Presbyterian Church, located at 45 Idlewood Road in Austintown, to solve their common problem - an addiction to nicotine. The group is based on the twelve steps of Alcoholics Anonymous and the only requirement to join is a desire to stop using nicotine. Cardinal 5K Donut Run

The Canfield Athletic Booster Club will be hosting the Cardinal 5K Donut Run May 26 at 11 a.m., with registration at 10 a.m., at Cardinal Stadium. All proceeds go to the athletic programs of the Canfield Cardinals. Runners will receive a Cardinal dry-fit t-shirt. The fee is $25. Make checks payable to Canfield Athletic Booster Club and send them to the Canfield High School athletic office, located at 100 Cardinal Drive. There will also be a Munchkin Run; those ten years of age and under are free. You may register as a team or an individual. Runners participate at their own risk.

Couch to 5K to begin May 20

The Ohio Naturopathic Wellness Center will present its third annual Couch to 5K program beginning May 20. There will be a free informational seminar on the program, given by Dr. Ted Suzelis, N.D., May 8 at 6:30 p.m. at his Boardman office, located in SouthBridge West (behind Second Sole) at 755 Boardman-Canfield Road, Suite D-3. The instructors this year will be Stephanie Yon, RRCA Certified Running Coach, and Sarah Terlecki, Group Fitness Instructor. Suzelis, also an avid runner, will assist with some of the sessions. Marge Hartman’s Paws Town at Boardman Park

Boardman Twp. Park and Marge Hartman’s Paws Town, a volunteer -non-profit organization, have partnered to create Boardman’s first dog park. Thanks to a large gift from the Marge Hartman Foundation, and the fund raising efforts of Paws Town, INC. organization, the Marge Hartman’s Paws Town Dog Park is open and accepting membership applications. Memberships will be good for one year from April 1 until March 31, 2015. Membership fees will not be prorated. Memberships for Boardman residents will be $40 for one dog and $10 for each additional dog. Non-Boardman resident fee will be $65 for one dog and $10 for each additional dog. Membership packets may be picked up at the Boardman Park Office, in the outdoor literature boxes at the Dog Park, or online at boardmanpark.com. Beginning April 1, everyone using Paws Town Dog Park must have a membership in order to ensure that all dogs are healthy and vaccinated. New members will be given a code to enter the dog park and they will also be issued a badge to wear.

Fibonacci numbers exhibit

Come to the Weller Gallery through June 8 to view the fibonacci numbers exhibit which takes an up-close look at the world of fibonacci numbers and their relationship to the world.

Through the Lens

Come to the Melnick Museum through December 2014 to take a peek at the evolution of photography during the Melnick Museum’s exhibit Through the Lens. The exhibit displays a rare collection of glass negatives and acetate film negatives produced by two local photographers, which chronicle scenes of Mill Creek Park from 1907 through 1926. In addition to park scenes, several portrait negatives of the period are on display.

Poland Lions Club fundraiser

The Poland Lions Club will be having a fundraiser May 17 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Poland Masonic Lodge, located at 7685 Youngstown Pittsburgh Road on Route 170 near Dobbins Road. There will be a gift basket raffle that will include a Swarovski crystal necklace, a Kindle, a signed Browns football, golf, a Moutaineer Resort stay, a camera, a shredder, headphones, jewelry, a Nine West wallet, a Steve Madden wallet, $100 gift card basket, Indians tickets, massages and more. Winners need not be present. The drawing is at 2 p.m.

Short term host family opportunities available through 4-H

Mahoning, Columbiana, Portage, and Trumbull County families will have the opportunity to welcome a young person from Japan into their home for one month this year, as part of an international exchange program being offered by the County OSU Extension, 4-H. Statewide, host families are needed for 100 Japanese youngsters (aged 12-18) and their adult chaperones, who will visit Ohio from July 23 through Aug. 18.

Host families provide the exchangees with room and board and a chance to experience daily life in America. Families are urged not to alter their daily routines or lifestyles during their visitor’s stay. Exchangees provide their own spending money, and the sponsoring organization furnishes comprehensive medical insurance.

All types of families are welcome to apply to become hosts, including urban, rural, single-parent, childless, and non-4-H families. The only requirements are that for the Japanese month-long exchange, hosts must have a family member of the same gender and approximate age of the exchangee, three meals a day, and a separate bed for the visitor.
