YOUNGSTOWN

In celebration of Salvation Army Week this week, the Youngstown Salvation Army recognized area organizations and individuals for their commitment to service in the Mahoning Valley.

Its annual civic dinner took place Wednesday at the Lake Club in Poland.

Honorees were: Mahoning County Chapter of the Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary, Rotary Club of Boardman, Humility of Mary Health Partners and Rebecca L. Keck.

Major Elijah O. Kahn, Salvation Army Mahoning County Area services coordinator, described the activities of the recipients that led to their being recognized.

In the past 34 years, the Women’s Auxiliary has provided funds for equipment for the kitchen, dining hall, furniture and sound equipment and supported summer camp and weekend excursions to Salvation Army and numerous other programs and projects.

In 2007, the Women’s Auxiliary was recognized as Outstanding Civic Organization by the Mahoning/Shenango Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals for its more than 15,000 hours of volunteer service.

The Rotary Club of Boardman, founded in 1955, is an organization of business and professional leaders who provide humanitarian services. One of Rotary International’s major projects is its “Polio Plus Campaign,” which has raised three-quarters of a billion dollars to wipe out polio. Over the last 10 years, Boardman Rotary has donated more than $400,000 to local projects.

Humility of Mary Health Partners Foundation was created in 2006 as a result of the merger of the St. Elizabeth and St. Joseph Development Foundations. The HMHP Foundation has awarded millions of dollars in grants annually to support health-related services and programs in the Mahoning Valley.

Rebecca L. Keck is a long-time advocate for quality art education. Keck, a Youngstown native, has been a member of the Mahoning County Salvation Army board since 1998 and was the board’s first female chairman.
