Spartan baseball has mixed week

Boardman started the week with an extra inning loss to first place Massillon Jackson 7-6. The Spartans were one strike away from winning in the seventh inning.

With two outs, nobody on and a one ball and two strikes count on the hitter, the pitcher walked the tying run to first base. After an error and a single the game was tied. Jackson scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.

The Spartans walked the lead off hitter to start the inning. Then committed a two base error on a botched pick off play. The next hitter popped out before Jackson singled in the winning run. Boardman’s offense was led by Brian Fryda and Evan Croutch with two hits and two RBIs each.

The Spartans beat Warren Harding on May 9 with a score of 11-4. Scott Lendak, Carmen Marinucci, Eddie Crump and Lou Cardona each had three hits to pace the offense. Cardona homered, doubled and singled driving in four runs. Brian Fryda also doubled for Boardman. Aaron Dill and Nick Kubala combined to pitch the win.

Boardman ended the week with a loss to Howland 8-2. Brian Fryda, Mike Notary and Eddie Crump had two hits each. Both of Crump’s hits were doubles. Howland broke the game open with three runs in the fifth inning.

BGMS wins relays

Boardman Glenwood’s boys track team won the Waldo Ward Relays in Columbiana on May 5. The top three finishers were BGMS, South Range and Lowellville. The girls took third place and set a new record of 6:18.30 for the distance medley relay. The girls 4X600 relay also broke their own meet record from last year with a time of 7:51.2. Both boys are girls team received special recognition for their 4X200 times. BGMS also won the overall championship which is a combination of both the boys and girls results.
