Boardman defeats Canton McKinley

Boardman raised its record to 5-6 on the season with a win at Canton McKinley. Sophomore Sidney Aey pitched a complete game four hitter with 14 strike-outs and sophomore Anna Saxton belted a two run homer in the first to lead the way.

In the top of the first, Boardman’s Kristen Huck would lay down a perfect bunt and beat out the throw, with two outs and a runner in scoring position. Saxton pounded a shot to center that would clear the fence giving the Spartans an early 2-0 lead. Canton would answer with a run of their own and after one inning the score was Boardman 2, Canton 1. That score would remain until the fifth inning.

The Lady Spartan bats would begin to put pressure on the McKinley defense, Lexi Caraballo beat out a bunt to start the inning. On a called hit and run, Melissa Maiorano would double into left scoring Caraballo. Maiorano would eventually score on a hit by Miyah Mitchum. Boardman led 4-1. In the sixth inning the Spartans would strike again as Hayley Eicher would draw a lead-off walk and Marissa Hanna would also walk. Maggie Loney would lay down a great bunt to sacrifice Eicher and Hanna to third and second, respectively. Sophomore Addison Menosky would clear the bases with a single into right on her first pitch. The Spartans now led 6-1.

In the seventh inning the lady Spartans would add three more runs on base hits by Mitchum, Saxton and Eicher. Hanna would reach on an error and the Spartans would lead 9-1 going into the bottom of the seventh. Canton would score two runs and the game would end 9-3.

“We played well today, but we have not yet played our best softball. You have to look at this team and be proud of the way they stuck together tonight. They have won three in a row and have a tough battle at Glen Oak on Thursday and Sharon on Friday. We used three seniors, one junior, eight sophomores and three freshman tonight and played well despite it being some of the girls’ first varsity experience,” said coach Trell.
