Class of 1984 reunion

The Austintown Fitch Class of 1984 30-year Class Reunion will take place on July 12 from 7-11 p.m. at the Maronite Center, located at 1555 S. Meridian Road in Youngstown. Youngstown Torch Club to meet

The Youngstown Torch Club will meet May 19 on the campus of Youngstown State University in Kilcawley Center, in Bresnahan Rooms 1 and 2. Youngstown Shrine Club to host dinner

The Youngstown Shrine Club will host a fish fry dinner May 23 from 3-7 p.m. at its indoor banquet hall. The dinner includes fish, coleslaw, french fries, macaroni and cheese, rolls and a beverage. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children. Children under ten are free. The Youngstown Shrine Club is located at 1735 W. South Range Road Route 165 in North Lima. The public is encouraged to attend. Tickets can be purchased at the door and carry-out meals are also available.

Baby Bargain Boutique set for June 7

Boardman Park will be having its annual Baby Bargain Boutique on June 7 at the Masters Pavilion from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Admission is free with a non-perishable food item donation for Second Harvest Food Bank. The Baby Bargain Boutique allows families to purchase good usable baby, children and maternity clothing, toys, books furniture and much more for children under the age of eight.

For those who have items to sell, reservations for table rentals start May 7 for Boardman residents and May 8 for non-residents. Table reservations can only be made at the park office from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Indoor and outdoor spots are available. The price for Boardman residents is $20 for inside and $15 for outside. The price for non-residents is $25 for inside and $20 for outside. Outside spots must bring their own table and may use a pop-up tent. You may only reserve two tables/spots.

Monday Night Writers meeting scheduled for May 19

Area writers, both published and unpublished, are invited to attend the next meeting of Monday Night Writers, to take place May 19 from 6-8 p.m. at Peaberry’s Caf , located 4350 Boardman-Canfield Road.

Led by author and professional writer Nancy Christie, the two-hour sessions include a mix of writing exercises, information on the creative and business aspects of writing, and group feedback on ‘works-in-progress.’ The fee is $10 per class and registration is preferred.

Boardman Park to offer Adventure Camp

Register online for Boardman Park Adventure Camp at www.boardmanparkcamp.com. You will create your own account where you sign up for your preferred weeks and track your payments. Discounts will be given for early bird enrollment if paid by June 6. Boardman resident and multi-sibling family discounts will be offered when application is completed.

The camp will take place June 16 through August 15. Camp hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. for children who have completed kindergarten and up to 12 years old.

Arrangements can be made if you need to bring campers early or pick them up later. In addition to experiencing the outdoors, the children will benefit from arts and crafts, team building, creative arts, science and sports. The goal of the camp is to offer young minds the opportunity to explore their imagination, discover physical fitness, expand their knowledge of sports and develop a growing sense of adventure through diverse activities.

Memorial Mile run to be May 26

The 24th annual Memorial Mile running road race will take place on May 26 at 9:35 a.m. in Boardman. Some of the best runners in the area will compete for gift certificates and awards in 14 age groups. Runners ages 11 and under are free with pre-registration by May 19. The entry fee is $8 in advance for all others and $10 day of race for everyone. The race starts at Routes 224 and 7. Day of race registration and packets can be picked up at Walgreens at Route 224 and Route 7. The event is sponsored by Walgreens, Quaker Steak and Lube in Boardman, the DeBartolo Corporation, Armstrong, Novak and Davis Insurance and other local businesses. Spring craft show to be May 17

TOPS 2191 Austintown will be hosting a spring craft show May 17 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Wickliffe Presbyterian Church, located at 45 Idlewood Road in Austintown. Admittance is free and there will be a Chinese auction. Concession sales will benefit the Austintown Night Out event.

Superhero staff and student game to be May 27

On May 27 at 7 p.m., there will be a staff versus students basketball game to fundraise for 5-year-old Brayden Mitchell who is battling stage three kidney cancer. The game will be played in the Austintown Middle School gymnasium. Mitchell, who is a fan of superheroes, has requested everyone to come dressed in their favorite superhero outfits. The event was organized by Mr. Steve Ward’s seventh period Life Literature Class at Fitch High School.

Rust Belt Theater to present “Can You Hear Me?”

The Rust Belt Theater Company will present “Can You Hear Me?,” a dark comedy written and directed by Brian Lee on May 10, 16 and 17 at 8 p.m. Starring husband and wife acting duo Craig and Liz Conrad, the play centers on an unconventional love story that takes place between two people in adjoining prison cells who build a relationship without ever laying eyes on each other. Brian Lee has been involved with community theater for 30 years. He has written five plays. “Can You Hear Me?” was awarded Best Original Script at the Ohio AACTfest. His play “Nightlight” won the OCTA Playwright award. Last year, he was honored with a Marquee Award for Best Original Script for Family Reunion, a play that also had its Youngstown debut at the Rust Belt Theater Company. MCCTC students host spring plant sale

Students in the horticulture program at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center will host the school’s annual spring plant sale beginning May 5. Students have prepared items including assorted annuals, hanging baskets and fresh vegetables. Flats of flowers will also be available. The horticulture green house will be open to the public from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., Monday through Friday, throughout the month of May until all items are sold. Support group to host indoor picnic

The Mahoning Valley Fibromyalgia Support Group will finish this season’s monthly meetings May 21 with an indoor picnic for members and their families. Main dishes and table service will be provided. Everyone is asked to bring a side dish or dessert to share and their own beverage. The picnic will take place at Bethel Lutheran Church, located at 425 Crestview Drive in Boardman at 7 p.m. All past speakers are invited as guests.

The next regularly scheduled meeting will be Sept. 17. There will be no meetings in June, July or Aug.

Spring for Life fundraiser

Right to Life of Mahoning County is sponsoring a Spring for Life fundraiser dinner May 27 at the Georgetown, located at 5945 South Avenue in Boardman. Guest speakers for the evening will be Rev. Walter S. Moss, Pastor of Foursquare Church in Canton and author of “Why I Am a Black Pro-life Pastor,” and Father Greg Maturi, Pastor of St. Dominic’s Church. Slavic committee seeking applicants

The Simply Slavic committee has announced that is seeking applicants for its academic scholarship. Undergraduate YSU students who have completed their freshman year and are currently enrolled at YSU are encouraged to apply for the $500 scholarship. All applicants are required to submit a 500 word essay on how being Slavic affects their life. Applicants must also substantiate their Slavic lineage.

A panel made up of the Simply Slavic organizing committee will select the winners after reviewing the essays, overall academic achievement, faculty recommendations, and involvement in their culture. The deadline for scholarship applicants is May 23. The winners will be announced at the group’s fourth annual festival June 21 from noon until 11 p.m. on Federal Plaza East.

Bonding with babies and books

Caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months are invited to the Austintown library Tuesdays in May at 10 a.m. for 20 minutes of language enrichment, including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Dairy Queen cake decorating event

The Cornersburg Dairy Queen, located at 3555 S. Meridian Road, will be having a cake decorating event May 10, where children will decorate a cake for mom, and June 14, where children will decorate a cake for dad. Qualified Dairy Queen cake decorators will be available to assist. Place an Edible Image of your choice on your cake for that added touch.

On May 20, the Austintown Intermediate School’s fifth-grade choir will sing the National Anthem for the Pittsburgh Pirates versus the Baltimore Orioles baseball game at PNC Park. This has been a class tradition for a number of years.

Tara Cioffi, administrator of the Mahoning-Trumbull Air Pollution Control Agency, will present the local history of the agency and services it provides at the Austintown library May 19 at 10 a.m.

The Air Pollution Agency’s mission is to attain and maintain the air quality at a level that will protect the environment for the benefit of all. The health effects associated with air pollution will also be discussed. A Friends monthly meeting will follow the presentation.

The Ursuline Center announces 2014 guided labyrinth walks

The Ursuline Center, located at 4280 Shields Road, will begin its 2014 guided labyrinth walk season April 27 (weather permitting) with a short presentation on the Spirituality of Labyrinths at 2 p.m. in the center and a guided walk immediately following. This year the center is offering a series of themed walks. On April 27 at 2 p.m., the walk will be “On the Path to Rebirth,” on May 13 at 6:30 p.m. the walk will be “On the Path to Healing,” on June 19 at 6:30 p.m. the walk will be “On the Path to Emancipation: Freedom of Mind, Body and Spirit” in correlation with the Juneteenth holiday, on July 15 at 6:30 p.m., the walk will be “On the Path to Growing,” on Aug. 14 at 6:30 p.m., the walk will be “On the Path to Accepting,” on Sept. 16, 6:30 p.m., the walk will be “On the Path to Peace” and on Oct. 12 at 2 p.m., the walk will be “On the Path to Awareness” (presentation on Spirituality of Labyrinths in the center).

All people of faith are invited to attend, whether they are new to or experienced with walking a labyrinth. Walking the labyrinth usually takes about 20 minutes. People wishing to experience the Labyrinth but unable to make one of the guided walks can come anytime at their own convenience. There are printed guides that give suggestions for following the path provided at the Labyrinth’s entrance, but there is no right or wrong way to experience the sacred walk. People can use the labyrinth in any way they need. The Ursuline Center Labyrinth is a ministry of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown and open year-round from dawn to dusk for all persons of faith. Gamblers Anonymous to meet

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Cornersburg. iNaturalist hike

Meet at Ford Nature Center May 18 from 2-4 p.m. to hike around Lake Cohasset to observe wildlife and record observations on a new citizen science project website called iNaturalist.org. This will be an ongoing project to monitor Mill Creek MetroParks’ biodiversity and the public is encouraged to participate. After the hike, there will be a short introduction to the website and a demonstration on how to log observations. Moderate rating, 2.5 miles.

Voices of the night hike

Meet at Vikers Nature Preserve on May 23 from 8:30-10 p.m. to listen to a serenade of frogs. There will also be an opportunity catch, observe and then release frogs. Wear boots and bring flashlights. Easy rating, 1 mile.

Bluebird hike

Meet at MetroParks Farm May 25 from 2-4 p.m. to learn about bluebirds and how their numbers have slowly increased as you hike Bluebird Trail and check some nest boxes. Moderate, 1.5 or 2.5 miles.

Banding the baby falcons

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Wildlife hopes to have newly hatched peregrine falcons to band and the public is invited to watch. If you would like to attend this special activity, which will take place downtown on a week day, Ford Nature Center will keep a contact list. As soon as ODNR-DOW gives the details, you will be contacted with the date and time.

Bird sanctuary walk

Jeff Harvey of Wild Birds Unlimited will lead a walk at the Mill Creek Wildlife Sanctuary May 17 from 8-9:30 a.m. Boots are required. Registration is required at Ford Nature Center by May 16.

Peregrine falcons, an endangered species, have been nesting in downtown Youngstown for a decade. Plant spirals exhibit

Come to Fellows Riverside Gardens in the Weller Gallery from March 28 through June 8 for a plant spirals exhibit which takes an up-close look at the world of Fibonacci numbers and their relationship to the world around us.

Through the Lens exhibit

Come to Fellows Riverside Gardens in the Melnick Museum through December 2014 for the “Through the Lens” exhibit. The exhibit displays a rare collection of glass negatives and acetate film negatives produced by two local photographers which chronicle scenes of Mill Creek Park from 1907-1926. Several portrait negatives of the period also on display.

Garden adventure

Wild With Style Art Show seeking entries

Nicotine Anonymous to meet on Wednesdays

Nicotine Anonymous is a fellowship of individuals from every walk of life who meets every Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Wickliffe Presbyterian Church, located at 45 Idlewood Road in Austintown, to solve their common problem - an addiction to nicotine. The group is based on the twelve steps of Alcoholics Anonymous and the only requirement to join is a desire to stop using nicotine. Cardinal 5K Donut Run

The Canfield Athletic Booster Club will be hosting the Cardinal 5K Donut Run May 26 at 11 a.m., with registration at 10 a.m., at Cardinal Stadium. All proceeds go to the athletic programs of the Canfield Cardinals. Runners will receive a Cardinal dry-fit t-shirt. The fee is $25. Make checks payable to Canfield Athletic Booster Club and send them to the Canfield High School athletic office, located at 100 Cardinal Drive. There will also be a Munchkin Run; those ten years of age and under are free. You may register as a team or an individual. Runners participate at their own risk.

Couch to 5K to begin May 20

The Ohio Naturopathic Wellness Center will present its third annual Couch to 5K program beginning May 20. There will be a free informational seminar on the program, given by Dr. Ted Suzelis, N.D., May 8 at 6:30 p.m. at his Boardman office, located in SouthBridge West (behind Second Sole) at 755 Boardman-Canfield Road, Suite D-3. The instructors this year will be Stephanie Yon, RRCA Certified Running Coach, and Sarah Terlecki, Group Fitness Instructor. Suzelis, also an avid runner, will assist with some of the sessions. Marge Hartman’s Paws Town at Boardman Park

Boardman Twp. Park and Marge Hartman’s Paws Town, a volunteer -non-profit organization, have partnered to create Boardman’s first dog park. Thanks to a large gift from the Marge Hartman Foundation, and the fund raising efforts of Paws Town, INC. organization, the Marge Hartman’s Paws Town Dog Park is open and accepting membership applications. Memberships will be good for one year from April 1 until March 31, 2015. Membership fees will not be prorated. Memberships for Boardman residents will be $40 for one dog and $10 for each additional dog. Non-Boardman resident fee will be $65 for one dog and $10 for each additional dog. Membership packets may be picked up at the Boardman Park Office, in the outdoor literature boxes at the Dog Park, or online at boardmanpark.com. Beginning April 1, everyone using Paws Town Dog Park must have a membership in order to ensure that all dogs are healthy and vaccinated. New members will be given a code to enter the dog park and they will also be issued a badge to wear.

Fibonacci numbers exhibit

Come to the Weller Gallery through June 8 to view the fibonacci numbers exhibit which takes an up-close look at the world of fibonacci numbers and their relationship to the world.

Through the Lens

Come to the Melnick Museum through December 2014 to take a peek at the evolution of photography during the Melnick Museum’s exhibit Through the Lens. The exhibit displays a rare collection of glass negatives and acetate film negatives produced by two local photographers, which chronicle scenes of Mill Creek Park from 1907 through 1926. In addition to park scenes, several portrait negatives of the period are on display.

Knitting classes

The Friends of PLYMC are sponsoring series of knitting classes April 14, May 12 and June 9 from 10-11:30 a.m. in the meeting room of the Austintown library. If you have a Friends of PLYMC paid membership, classes are free. If you aren’t a Friend’s member but would like to attend the program, you can join the Friends for $10, which gives you a membership and covers all costs of the knitting class.

Open enrollment continues

The Austintown Local School District is continuing with its open enrollment policy for the 2014-15 school year. New for next school year, they will not be accepting any new open enrollments students in Grades 10, 11 or 12. This does not apply to existing open enrollment students who are currently enrolled in Austintown. New open enrollment students (accepting grades K–9 only) can begin to complete applications on March 3. One application must be completed for each student. For your convenience, computers are available for your use to complete the online forms at either the Austintown Early Learning Center, located at 4211 Evelyn Road, or the Austintown Board of Education building, located at 700 S.
