2 YSU softball players honored

Youngstown State softball players Casey Crozier and Miranda Castiglione have been named All-Midwest Region Second-Team by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

Castiglione and Crozier, who led the Penguins to 30 wins in 2014, are among 392 players from 158 different programs have been chosen to the 2014 NFCA Division I All-Region squads.

The pair become the sixth and seventh Youngstown State players to earn all-region laurels.

Crozier, the 2014 Horizon League Pitcher of the Year and an All-Horizon League First-Team selection, is the second Youngstown State pitcher to receive all-region recognition. Kelly Murphy was named to the second-team in 2003.

Crozier, a 2013 All-Horizon League Second-Team selection, led the Horizon League in wins (19), strikeouts (196), innings pitched (191) and games started (31).

A native of Valparaiso, Ind., Crozier set the Youngstown State career and single-season strikeout records with 565 and 196, respectively. Her 19 victories are the second-most in a single-season.

Castilgione, the 2014 Horizon League Co-Player of the Year and an All-Horizon League First-Team selection, finished with a team-high .395 batting average, 70 hits, 43 runs scored and 112 total bases. She is the second Youngstown State player in three years to be earn player-of-the-year honors and the third YSU player to win the award. Haley Thomas was named the Horizon League Player of the Year in 2012 and Amanda Berry won the award in 2003.

Castiglione set the YSU single-season record for runs with 43. Her 70 hits rank tied for second.
