YWCA plans STEAM camps for kids

The YWCA of Youngstown will offer a series of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) camps for youths in grades four through six this summer. One-week and one-day programs are available.

Young artists, 9 a.m. to noon, June 16 through 20, $90. Youths will experiment with different forms of art including sketching, painting, clay sculpting and graffiti art. Field trips and an end-of-week artwork showcase party are included. Materials will be supplied.

Summer Manufacturing Institute, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., boats July 14 through 18 or cars July 21 through 25, $125 per week. Participants will learn from manufacturing professionals and build a model boat or car. Included are an introduction to safety, design challenges at OH WOW! and field trips. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Youths may register for either or both camps.

KayD Broadcast & Communications, July 28 through Aug. 1, $60. Children will learn how to read, write and present like a broadcaster on radio or television, and acquire presentation, interviewing and typing skills. They also will take field trips to local television and radio stations and have the opportunity to meet local television and radio personalities.

Harmonious Y, all summer, $135. In 16 hour-and-a-half small group vocal lessons youths will learn breathing techniques and tone quality. There will be a performance at the end of the summer.

Other one-day workshops include pinhole photography, screen printing and puppet making. A weeklong dance workshop is planned for August. A 5 percent discount will be offered to those who register for two or more camps. A limited number of scholarships are available to those who qualify.

A regular summer camp will be offered for children in grades kindergarten through third. Also available is care for infants and toddlers ages 6 weeks to 21/2 years.

YWCA Discovery Place is a licensed center committed to providing the highest quality program possible to parents and children.

The infant and toddler care and preschool program feature certified and degreed teachers and a low staff-to-child ratio.

The preschool program includes a STEM-focused and age-appropriate curriculum designed for kindergarten readiness, enrichment classes including language arts, cultural diversity, and music, arts and crafts, indoor/outdoor free and structured play, field trips and a nutritious breakfast, lunch and snack.
