Austintown woman victim of check scam

AUSTINTOWN

A woman was scammed out of $1,300 by an Illinois person posing as an employer.

A female resident of South Roanoke Avenue told police Wednesday that she received an email through her Youngstown State email account that she had been hired as a personal assistant and was emailed checks totaling $1,850. She was told to deposit them in her account and to wire $1,300 via Western Union to a resident of Folkers Avenue, Peoria, Ill.

After the wire went through, she was emailed $3,660 more in checks. Then the original $1,300 was removed from her account because the checks were fraudulent.

She did not do anything with the $3,660 worth of checks.
