Up to 583,600 American steel-related jobs, including 33,900 in Ohio, could be at risk if the United States doesn’t fully enforce trade laws, according to a report from the Economic Policy Institute.
The report, released Tuesday, was conducted on behalf of the Alliance for American Manufacturing and examined how unfairly subsidized and dumped imports of oil-country tubular goods affect American jobs.
U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, a Democrat from Cleveland, is calling for the U.S. Department of Commerce to impose trade remedies on South Korean imports he said are being unfairly subsidized and dumped.
“Full enforcement of our trade laws is critical for the future of this industry and its workers,” Brown said Tuesday.
Companies petitioning the department for trade remedies against South Korea include Vallourec Star in Youngstown, TMK IPSCO in Brookfield and JMC Steel Group in Warren and Niles, Brown said.
