Penguins’ rally falls short in loss to Toledo
NILES
Toledo’s pitching staff limited the Youngstown State baseball team to four hits, and a late Penguins rally came up short as the Rockets won 6-2 Tuesday at Eastwood Field. Rockets starter Kyle Slack allowed one hit in six innings and had a 4-0 lead when he handed the ball to the bullpen. The Penguins scored two runs in the eighth and had the tying run in scoring position but couldn’t come up with the big hit. Toledo added two runs in the ninth for the final tally.
David Saluga had two of YSU’s hits, including an RBI single in the eighth, and Phil Lipari homered — his fourth of the season — in the eighth. Ryan Callahan homered and was 4-for-5 to lead Toledo.
The Penguins will begin their final series of the regular season on Thursday against Valparaiso. First pitch against the Crusaders is set for 5:30 p.m.

Allgaier, team to skip Sprint Showdown
CONCORD, N.C.
HScott Motorsports pulled rookie Justin Allgaier from the entry list for the Sprint Showdown on Tuesday after accidents in three of his last four races. Allgaier will watch Friday night’s qualifier at Charlotte Motor Speedway from the sidelines, and will not have a chance to race his way into the Sprint All-Star race. The top two finishers in the Showdown advance to Saturday night’s $1 million main event.
Allgaier is 29th in the Sprint Cup standings and does not have a top-10 finish this season. He said the HScott organization needs to regroup and focus on next week’s Coca-Cola 600, the longest race on the NASCAR schedule. By skipping the Showdown, the crew can work on building cars and concentrate on preparations for the May 25 race.
