Three singles players, one doubles team advance in D-I sectionals

Boardman’s Donni Barrett and Kris Santilli and Canfield’s Ryan Kaleel each went unbeaten in singles and Canfield’s top doubles team of William Brown and Nicholas Debiec their only two matches on the first day of the Division I sectional tennis tournament at Harvard Park and Stadium Park.

Barrett, the tournament’s second seed, earned a bye for the first round, then defeated Marietta’s Tyler Wise 6-0, 6-0 and Hoover’s Alex Gonyias 6-0, 6-0. He will face Perry’s Noah Ott in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

Quarterfinal winners will secure a spot in next week’s district tournament.

Santilli, who is unseeded, defeated Perry’s Hector Cuellar in the first round 6-2, 6-2, then beat Hoover’s Ashwin Krishna 6-2, 6-1 and GlenOak’s Jack Werren 6-3, 6-1.

Kaleel, who is also unseeded, beat Louisville’ Vic Knebl 6-0, 6-1 in the opener, then defeated Boardman’s Zach Fryda 6-0, 6-2 and Hoover’s James Oaks 6-3, 6-0.

Brown and Debiec, the tournament’s second seed, defeated Kenmore’s Stephon Mosley and Daniel Huggins 6-0, 6-0, then bested New Philadelphia’s Jacob Heck and Logan Pipes 6-1, 6-0. The Cardinals will meet North Canton Hoover’s Robert Year and Gregg Brandle in the quarterfinals.
