1989: A union officer representing Peter J. Schmitt Co.’s Sharon workers says Mahoning County union officials “really cut our legs from underneath us” by negotiating a labor contract that will enable the grocery wholesaler to hire workers at its North Jackson distribution center at lower wage rates.

Heavy thundershowers dump almost a half-inch of rain on Youngstown in a half-hour causing scattered flooding on some streets. It is so dark at noon downtown that street lights are turned on.
1939: Wally Henninger, 14-year-old Howland boy and an 8th grader at Bolindale School, wins the Trumbull County Marbles League championship after winning two of three games in the final set from Dick Worrells, 10, champion of Hubbard Roosevelt School.
