SCOPE Inc. of Trumbull County’s Niles Senior Center, 14 E. State St., is offering free health check-ups on May 23.

Rashaun Speed, a registered nurse with Humility of Mary Health Partners Neighborhood Health Watch, will perform cholesterol, glucose and blood pressure screenings and body mass index readings from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on a first-come, first-served basis.

Dr. Thomas Pokabla is offering free toenail clipping from 9 a.m. to noon by appointment only. The service is free, but participants are asked to bring their insurance cards as applicable co-pays will be billed.

Healthy Kids Day

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown Central YMCA in downtown Youngstown, corner of Commerce and Champion streets, is having its inaugural Healthy Kids Day from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday.

The free-play and learn-youth initiative kick-starts the YMCA’s off-school physical activity and learning program, said Tara Deagan, event coordinator.

Some of the activities are: Open swim; kids Zumba, Yoga, and Future Fitness classes; Lego leagues; face painting; healthy snacks; art projects and coloring contest; United Way Imagination Library; appearances by Camp Fitch, Youngstown Police Department and Youngstown Health Department personnel; St. Elizabeth’s Mobile Dental Unit, and scoliosis screening.

Annual walk for Suicide Awareness

The seventh annual Survivors of Suicide Awareness Walk in memory of loved ones who have died by suicide is from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Trumbull County Courthouse Gazebo, Courthouse Square.

Families, friends and the public are invited to attend and urged to bring photos or signs to highlight the loss of loved ones to suicide. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States.

The walk is sponsored by Loving Outreach to Survivors of Suicide (LOSS), Help Hotline Crisis Center, Inc., and Survivors of Suicide (SOS) of Mahoning and Columbiana counties. For information, call Help Hotline at 1-800-427-3606.

Rabies vaccination

BELOIT

The Mahoning County District Board of Health, in conjunction with veterinarian Dr. Lisa Kurtz and the East Park Veterinary Clinic of Columbiana, is offering a rabies vaccination clinic for dogs, cats and ferrets from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Beloit Village Fire Department, 17893 Fifth St.

Rabies vaccination for dogs, cats, and ferrets over 3 months is required in Mahoning County. The cost is $6 per shot. Pet owners must have pets on a leash, in a cage, or inside a pillowcase. No appointment is needed.

Individuals can protect themselves and their families from rabies by following these guidelines: Vaccinate pets, spay or neuter pets, avoid contact of pets and humans with wildlife and stray animals, wash animal bite areas thoroughly and follow up with a visit to the doctor.
