Beware of scam
WARREN
The Trumbull County Sheriff’s Office wants residents to be wary of a scam that has caused several people to call the sheriff’s office and resulted in a $1,500 loss for one couple.
A person called the couple posing as an attorney representing their grandson, who he said was in a Las Vegas jail and needed bail money.
He asked the couple to obtain three $500 “Green Cards,” a type of gift card available at local retailers, for a total value of $1,500.
They did so and provided the activation number from the back of the cards to the scammer, then later learned their grandson was not in trouble in Las Vegas, but their money was gone.
Deputies said anyone receiving such a call should check with the family involved first or contact law enforcement before assuming that such a request is legitimate.
