YOUNGSTOWN
The Youngstown Playhouse’s 2014-15 season will mark the theater company’s 90th anniversary.
To celebrate the milestone, the theater will present in October a special performance of the musical revue “What We Did for Love” that will relive memories of the Playhouse and feature many past performers.
The theater also will continue its tradition of fostering new theatrical works by presenting three world premieres and sponsoring the fourth annual “Voices of the Valley” new one-act play festival.
The season will begin with a blockbuster in September with a main stage production of “A Chorus Line.” David Jendre will direct and choreograph the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical.
The main stage also will see the classic Kaufman and Hart comedy “You Can’t Take It With You,” directed by Joseph Scarvell, in March.
The final main stage production will be “Fiddler on the Roof,” which is one of the most beloved musicals of the twentieth century. “Fiddler” will be marking its 50th anniversary this season.
A new version of a classic — “A Playhouse Christmas Carol” — will make its debut in November in a production created by Youngstown State University professor Matthew Mazuroski.
The world premiere of James Cannacci’s “Jonathan Frisby and the Rats of NIMH” will take the stage in April as part of the Playhouse Youth Theater.
The Griffith-Adler Actors Series in the Moyer Theater once again will offer a diverse season of new and classic plays, opening with “Tigers Be Still,” directed by Christopher Fidram in October.
Director Pat Foltz will follow with “Keeley and Du,” and John Cox will start the New Year with the world premiere of the comedy “Last Laugh.”
In April, the Griffith-Adler Series will host the Youth Theater production of “The Velveteen Rabbit,” directed by Molly Galano, and then close with the comedy “The Mystery of Irma Vep,” directed by Mazuroski.
As part of its community-outreach program, the Playhouse will host Kelly Turell’s “Red Carpet Talent Show” on Oct.11 and welcome the Angelo Babbaro Big Band All Stars in December.
The second annual “Acting for Autism Benefit” will take place in April.
For tickets to any production at the theater on Glenwood Avenue, call 330-788-8739 or go to theyoungstownplayhouse.com.
Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and 2:30 p.m. on Sundays.
