Planning meeting for walk/run May 19

The planning committee for the second annual African American Male Wellness Walk/Run of the Mahoning Valley will meet from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. May 19 and 29 at the Newport Branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, 3730 Market St. There is no fee to participate.

The event is set for Aug. 2 at the Covelli Centre, beginning with health screenings at 7 a.m. and concluding with a 5-mile walk on the South Side, North Side and downtown areas.

“Our target is black men, but the words ‘of the Mahoning Valley’ were added to the name of the event to convey to people that anyone from the area can participate,” said the Rev. Lewis W. Macklin, chairman of the walk. Fundraising is critical to the success of the event, he said, noting that anyone wanting to sponsor or donate should call 330-788-1696.
