Covelli Enterprises and O’Charley’s will offer a free slice of pie for all moms for Mother’s Day Sunday . The offer is valid throughout the day with the stores opening early at 10 a.m. for brunch.

“This is our way of honoring some of our best customers, the hardworking moms in our communities,” said Sam Covelli, owner/operator of Covelli Enterprises, the local franchisee of O’Charley’s.

All Covelli-owned O’Charley’s locations, including local restaurants in Boardman, Niles and Erie, Pa., will participate.

Memorial service

Brookfield Township firefighters, auxiliary members and Brookfield police will gather for a memorial service May 20 at the fire station, 774 state Route 7 NE. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m.; the service will begin at 7. The public is welcome.

Rabies clinic set

BELOIT

Mahoning County District Board of Health, in conjunction with veterinarian Dr. Lisa Kurtz and the East Park Veterinary Clinic of Columbiana, is offering a rabies-vaccination clinic for dogs, cats and ferrets from 2 to 4 p.m. next Saturday at Beloit Village Fire Department, 17893 Fifth St.

Rabies vaccination for all dogs, cats and ferrets more than 3 months old is required in Mahoning County. The cost is $6 per shot.

Pet owners must have pets on a leash, in a cage or inside a pillowcase. No appointment is needed.

Planning meeting

The planning committee for the second annual African American Male Wellness Walk/Run of the Mahoning Valley will meet from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. May 19 and 29 at the Newport Branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, 3730 Market St. There is no fee to participate.

The event is set for Aug. 2 at the Covelli Centre, beginning with health screenings at 7 a.m. and concluding with a 5-mile walk on the South Side, North Side and downtown areas.

“Our target is black men, but the words ‘of the Mahoning Valley’ were added to the name of the event to convey to people that anyone from the area can participate,” said the Rev. Lewis W. Macklin, chairman of the walk. Fundraising is critical to the success of the event, he said, noting that anyone wanting to sponsor or donate should call 330-788-1696.

Fire destroys vacant house

YOUNGSTOWN

City firefighters are investigating a vacant house fire from Thursday afternoon. Fire officials said they responded to a call at 3:12 p.m. Thursday at 28 W. Philadelphia Ave. Once on scene, firefighters found the first floor ablaze.

Neighbors said the house, which had no gas or water service, had been vacant for some time. The two-story building was deemed a total loss. No injuries were reported. Officials said there were no witnesses and the cause is under investigation.
