Darren L. Lee, 27, of West Avenue Northwest was sentenced to nine years in prison Thursday after pleading guilty in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court to firing a gun at two newspaper carriers and possessing drugs Jan. 30 on West Avenue Northwest.

Police said Lee fired a shot at the car the carriers were using, leaving a bullet hole in the windshield and one near the front-passenger door.

The shooting occurred at 6:35 a.m. as the 43-year-old man and his 18-year-old daughter were passing through the neighborhood and heard gunshots. A short time later, officers found Lee with a handgun, suspected heroin and suspected cocaine in his pockets.

Guilty in drug case

A jury found Derrick Eggleston, 27, of Fourth Street Southwest, guilty Thursday in of heroin possession and heroin trafficking. He will be sentenced June 3 in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court.

A Warren police officer made a traffic stop on Eggleston’s car at the corner of Austin Avenue and Front Street Southwest at 11:10 p.m. Jan. 3 and found heroin and $1,588 in Eggle-ston’s possession.

Recruiting volunteers

Red Cross of the Mahoning Valley is recruiting volunteers to be trained in disaster response and be a member of a Disaster Action Team and work directly with disasters, such as home fires, in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties.

DAT volunteers are trained to help people close to home. Additional training for larger disasters, such as hurricanes and tornadoes, is available. Volunteers get free first-aid and CPR training enabling them to help family and friends in emergencies.
