Gorski named to athletic director role
Athletics are not just for men and boys, and the new Athletic Director at Boardman proves that.
Denise Gorski, a veteran teacher and coach, accepted a three year contract with Boardman to be the athletic director. This is the first time in history that a female has taken the position.
Gorski has been working for the Boardman Local Schools since 1977, when she graduated with her teaching degree in physical education and health. She taught physical education as well as coached track and field, girls’ basketball and girls’ golf.
After 35 years in education, all at Boardman, she decided to retire.
“I didn’t have intentions of working until I was asked to help in the athletic department in October,” said Gorski.
After four months, she started her new job as athletic director when Dave Smercansky retired.
“I am truly enjoying the position of athletic director. It’s a very demanding job time wise, but a very rewarding one because I still have a lot of contact with students, coaches, staff and parents,” said Gorski.
Gorski has her hands full with keeping up with the outstanding sports teams at Boardman, but she has already added new ideas and clubs to the district.
“One of the highlights for me this year was the creation of the Spartan Spirit Crew that was designed to help increase school spirit. The club really did bring the students out in force this year and I think they have a lot of fun being more supportive of each other,” she said.
One of the most exciting aspects of her job is the building of the new stadium. Gorski feels it is a must for the district.
“I’m excited about the new stadium because it will benefit so many programs including many sports and physical education classes. There is a need for us to have a facility like the proposed one, especially when you see the facilities of many other schools in our area and our league. It is time for us to update, and I appreciate all the work the Boardman Boosters have done in starting the campaign for it a few years ago,” she said.
