Spin for Chris to be June 7

There will be a benefit for Boardman teacher Chris Moschella Terlesky from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on June 7 at Creekside Fitness. All proceeds will be donated to Chris in her battle against ALS.

The event will take place outdoors, where more than 50 spin bikes will be available to ride. The cost for cyclists is $100 per hour. Teams of five can reserve a bike for $500. Local businesses may sponsor a bike for $500 (includes 1 hour of spin time) or $100. Bike sponsors will receive a laminated sign on a bike, and a program advertisement.

HMHP to host product fair for ostomy patients

A product fair featuring companies that specialize in medical supplies for ostomy patients is slated for 6:30-7:30 p.m. on May 13 at Humility House, located at 755 Ohltown Road in Austintown. ConvaTec, Hollister, Coloplast and Nu-Hope are among the companies that will be represented during the fair, which takes place during the monthly meeting of the Youngstown Area Ostomy Support Group.

The Youngstown Area Ostomy Support Group, sponsored by Humility of Mary Health Partners, provides ostomy patients and their families and friends the opportunity to share experiences while receiving ongoing education and information. Meetings of the Youngstown Area Ostomy Support Group take place the second Tuesday of each month with meeting places alternating between Humility House and St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center.

Rust Belt Theater to present “Can You Hear Me?”

The Rust Belt Theater Company will present “Can You Hear Me?,” a dark comedy written and directed by Brian Lee on May 10, 16 and 17 at 8 p.m. Starring husband and wife acting duo Craig and Liz Conrad, the play centers on an unconventional love story that takes place between two people in adjoining prison cells who build a relationship without ever laying eyes on each other. Brian Lee has been involved with community theater for 30 years. He has written five plays. “Can You Hear Me?” was awarded Best Original Script at the Ohio AACTfest. His play “Nightlight” won the OCTA Playwright award. Last year, he was honored with a Marquee Award for Best Original Script for Family Reunion, a play that also had its Youngstown debut at the Rust Belt Theater Company. Spring for Life fundraiser

Right to Life of Mahoning County is sponsoring a Spring for Life fundraiser dinner May 27 at the Georgetown, located at 5945 South Avenue in Boardman.

Guest speakers for the evening will be Rev. Walter S. Moss, Pastor of Foursquare Church in Canton and author of “Why I Am a Black Pro-life Pastor,” and Father Greg Maturi, Pastor of St. Dominic’s Church. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and dinner begins at 6 p.m. The cost is $10.

MCCTC students host spring plant sale

Students in the horticulture program at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center will host the school’s annual spring plant sale beginning May 5.

Students have prepared items including assorted annuals, hanging baskets and fresh vegetables. Flats of flowers will also be available.

Middle schools to present spring concert

The Boardman Middle Schools will present a fifth-, sixth- and seventh-grade band spring concert May 28 at 7 p.m. in the Boardman High School Performing Arts Center.

This concert will feature the bands from both Center and Glenwood Middle Schools. The fifth-grade band portion will include a performance of “Hang on Sloopy,” the state of Ohio’s official rock song. The sixth-grade band portion will include “Limbo Rock” as performed by Chubby Checker and arrangements of “Let It Go” from Disney’s “Frozen” and “Cups” as recorded by Anna Kendrick.

The concert will close with the combined seventh-grade band performance of “Sounds of Sousa,” including “The Stars and Stripes Forever” as arranged by James Ployhar.

Admission and donations accepted at the door. Adult tickets are $3, students are $2, senior citizens and children under 10 are free.

Free speech and language screenings for children

In recognition of national Better Hearing and Speech Month this May, Beyond Expectations Speech Therapy, located at 725 Boardman-Canfield Road, will provide free speech and language screenings for children all month by appointment. Students to perform for community

The students at Stadium Drive Elementary and West Boulevard Elementary Schools will be performing for the Boardman community at their spring concert. The students that attend Stadium Drive will perform on May 19 at 7 p.m. and the students attending West Boulevard will perform on May 21 at 7 p.m. This year’s theme is “Gone Campin’.” The students at both schools will be led by Mr. Dean Wilson, the Elementary Music Specialist.

YSU students recognized at awards banquet

Younstown State University students received awards at the annual student awards banquet on campus. Connor Hetzel received the De-Crane-Houser Memorial Scholarship, presented by the Newman Center in memory of Father DeCrane and Judge Houser.

Hetzel is a junior majoring in Computer Science. Leo Daprile received the AVI Leadership Scholarship for outstanding undergraduate campus leaders. Daprile is a senior majoring in Industrial and Systems Engineering. William Macomber received the Sirius Award for student employee of the year. Macomber is a senior majoring in Nursing.

American Business Women’s Association to meet

Dan Gonder, local radio personality and host of Clear Channel Radio Youngstown, will be the guest speaker during the May 13 meeting of the Mill Creek Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association. His presentation will follow a 6:30 p.m. dinner at A La Cart Catering, located at 429 Lisbon Street in Canfield.

Group to host

The Mahoning Valley Fibromyalgia Support Group will finish this season’s monthly meetings May 21 with an indoor picnic for members and their families. Main dishes and table service will be provided. Everyone is asked to bring a side dish or dessert to share and their own beverage. The picnic will take place at Bethel Lutheran Church, located at 425 Crestview Drive in Boardman at 7 p.m. All past speakers are invited as guests.

The next regularly scheduled meeting will be Sept. 17. There will be no meetings in June, July or August.

Slavic committee seeking applicants

The Simply Slavic committee has announced that is seeking applicants for its academic scholarship.

Undergraduate YSU students who have completed their freshman year and are currently enrolled at YSU are encouraged to apply for the $500 scholarship. All applicants are required to submit a 500 word essay on how being Slavic affects their life.

Applicants must also substantiate their Slavic lineage.

A panel made up of the Simply Slavic organizing committee will select the winners after reviewing the essays, overall academic achievement, faculty recommendations, and involvement in their culture. The deadline for scholarship applicants is May 23.

The winners will be announced at the group’s fourth annual festival June 21 from noon until 11 p.m. on Federal Plaza East.

Plant and veggie sale to be May 8-10

The Men’s Garden Club of Youngstown and surrounding communities will host its annual plant and veggie sale May 8-10 at the MASCO greenhouse located at South Avenue and Bev Road in Boardman from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. Sales support horticulture scholarships and community civic projects, along with its winter seminar.

Bonding with babies, books

Caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months are invited to the Boardman library May 2 and 16 at 10 a.m. for 20 minutes of language enrichment, including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

ABWA to host May meeting

Tri-Gold Prime Time Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will host their May meeting at A La Cart Catering 429 Lisbon St. in Canfield. Social time will be at 5:30 p.m. with dinner buffet at 6 p.m. May 14.

Proper flag disposal

During the month of May, Shepherd of the Valley is taking in tired, torn and faded American flags that need to be retired.

Most flags are not retired and burned with the ceremony they deserve. Some are burned in a barrel; some in a pile on the ground; others are cremated at a funeral home. Shepherd of the Valley wants to change this.

Flags can be dropped off at any Shepherd of the Valley community between 8:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily. Drop-off hours for the corporate offices are 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. Flags will be delivered to a local veteran’s group for proper disposal.

The Ursuline Center announces 2014 guided labyrinth walks

The Ursuline Center, located at 4280 Shields Road, will begin its 2014 guided labyrinth walk season April 27 (weather permitting) with a short presentation on the Spirituality of Labyrinths at 2 p.m. in the center and a guided walk immediately following. This year the center is offering a series of themed walks. On April 27 at 2 p.m., the walk will be “On the Path to Rebirth,” on May 13 at 6:30 p.m. the walk will be “On the Path to Healing,” on June 19 at 6:30 p.m. the walk will be “On the Path to Emancipation: Freedom of Mind, Body and Spirit” in correlation with the Juneteenth holiday, on July 15 at 6:30 p.m., the walk will be “On the Path to Growing,” on Aug. 14 at 6:30 p.m., the walk will be “On the Path to Accepting,” on Sept. 16, 6:30 p.m., the walk will be “On the Path to Peace” and on Oct. 12 at 2 p.m., the walk will be “On the Path to Awareness” (presentation on Spirituality of Labyrinths in the center).

All people of faith are invited to attend, whether they are new to or experienced with walking a labyrinth. Walking the labyrinth usually takes about 20 minutes. People wishing to experience the Labyrinth but unable to make one of the guided walks can come anytime at their own convenience. There are printed guides that give suggestions for following the path provided at the Labyrinth’s entrance, but there is no right or wrong way to experience the sacred walk. People can use the labyrinth in any way they need. The Ursuline Center Labyrinth is a ministry of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown and open year-round from dawn to dusk for all persons of faith. Gamblers Anonymous to meet

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Cornersburg. Fitness Together 5k run and walk

iNaturalist hike

Meet at Ford Nature Center May 18 from 2-4 p.m. to hike around Lake Cohasset to observe wildlife and record observations on a new citizen science project website called iNaturalist.org. This will be an ongoing project to monitor Mill Creek MetroParks’ biodiversity and the public is encouraged to participate. After the hike, there will be a short introduction to the website and a demonstration on how to log observations. Moderate rating, 2.5 miles.

Voices of the night hike

Meet at Vikers Nature Preserve on May 23 from 8:30-10 p.m. to listen to a serenade of frogs. There will also be an opportunity catch, observe and then release frogs. Wear boots and bring flashlights. Easy rating, 1 mile.

Bluebird hike

Meet at MetroParks Farm May 25 from 2-4 p.m. to learn about bluebirds and how their numbers have slowly increased as you hike Bluebird Trail and check some nest boxes. Moderate, 1.5 or 2.5 miles.

Recreational hikes

There will be a series of volunteer-led, recreational hikes. These hikes are generally faster paced and focus on exercising in the outdoors. Banding the baby falcons

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Wildlife hopes to have newly hatched peregrine falcons to band and the public is invited to watch. If you would like to attend this special activity, which will take place downtown on a week day, Ford Nature Center will keep a contact list. As soon as ODNR-DOW gives the details, you will be contacted with the date and time.

Bird sanctuary walk

Jeff Harvey of Wild Birds Unlimited will lead a walk at the Mill Creek Wildlife Sanctuary May 17 from 8-9:30 a.m. Boots are required. Registration is required at Ford Nature Center by May 16.

Peregrine falcons, an endangered species, have been nesting in downtown Youngstown for a decade. Family garden Fridays

Come to Fellows Riverside Gardens Fridays starting May 9 until Oct. 17 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. to take part in drop-in activities in the family garden. Watch as the garden grows with characters from “Alice in Wonderland” and Wonderland-like plants. Learn about garden creatures, tools and how to care for a garden. Take part in making garden treats, listening to stories, children’s yoga and adventuring with Alice and her friends.

Mother’s Day at MetroParks Farm

Wild With Style Art Show seeking entries

Amateur artists of all ages may submit artwork for display. Entries will be accepted at Ford Nature Center starting May 24 until June 1. Nicotine Anonymous to meet on Wednesdays

Nicotine Anonymous is a fellowship of individuals from every walk of life who meets every Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Wickliffe Presbyterian Church, located at 45 Idlewood Road in Austintown, to solve their common problem - an addiction to nicotine. The group is based on the twelve steps of Alcoholics Anonymous and the only requirement to join is a desire to stop using nicotine. Cardinal 5K Donut Run

The Canfield Athletic Booster Club will be hosting the Cardinal 5K Donut Run May 26 at 11 a.m., with registration at 10 a.m., at Cardinal Stadium. All proceeds go to the athletic programs of the Canfield Cardinals. Runners will receive a Cardinal dry-fit t-shirt. The fee is $25. Make checks payable to Canfield Athletic Booster Club and send them to the Canfield High School athletic office, located at 100 Cardinal Drive. There will also be a Munchkin Run; those ten years of age and under are free. You may register as a team or an individual. Runners participate at their own risk.

Couch to 5K to begin May 20

The Ohio Naturopathic Wellness Center will present its third annual Couch to 5K program beginning May 20. There will be a free informational seminar on the program, given by Dr. Ted Suzelis, N.D., May 8 at 6:30 p.m. at his Boardman office, located in SouthBridge West (behind Second Sole) at 755 Boardman-Canfield Road, Suite D-3. Marge Hartman’s Paws Town at Boardman Park

Boardman Twp. Park and Marge Hartman’s Paws Town, a volunteer -non-profit organization, have partnered to create Boardman’s first dog park. Thanks to a large gift from the Marge Hartman Foundation, and the fund raising efforts of Paws Town, INC. organization, the Marge Hartman’s Paws Town Dog Park is open and accepting membership applications. Memberships will be good for one year from April 1 until March 31, 2015. Membership fees will not be prorated. Memberships for Boardman residents will be $40 for one dog and $10 for each additional dog. Non-Boardman resident fee will be $65 for one dog and $10 for each additional dog. Membership packets may be picked up at the Boardman Park Office, in the outdoor literature boxes at the Dog Park, or online at boardmanpark.com. Beginning April 1, everyone using Paws Town Dog Park must have a membership in order to ensure that all dogs are healthy and vaccinated. New members will be given a code to enter the dog park and they will also be issued a badge to wear.

Lanterman’s Mill hours

Lanterman’s Mill will be having limited hours beginning April 5 on Saturdays and Sundays only from 12-4 p.m. with full hours beginning May 1. Full hours will be Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and closed on Mondays.

St. Charles School registration

Registration for children entering St. Charles for the 2014-2015 school year is taking place now. The following materials are needed to complete registration: copy of birth certificate, copy of baptismal certificate (if Catholic) and immunization records. Effective Fall 2011, Ohio law now requires that every kindergarten or first-grade student entering school must have two varicella/chicken pox as well as the other required immunizations by day 14 of school or they cannot attend until up-to-date. Grades 4-6 students need only one varicella. Grade 7 students need Tdap or Td booster. A Social Security number and $25 non-refundable registration fee is also required. Checks can be made payable to Lumen Christi Catholic Schools. Proof of child custody (if applicable), and a copy of the child’s last report card from previous school must be provided for grades 1-8 only. The registration application takes about 10-15 minutes to fill out with basic information, including work addresses and phone numbers.

Boardman Local Schools announce 2014/2015 kindergarten registration

The Boardman Local School District is now offering kindergarten registration for the 2014-2015 school year. Any parent who is a Boardman resident interested in signing their child up for kindergarten may visit the elementary school they wish their child to attend to pick up registration forms. Requirements for registration are: the child must be five years of age on or before Aug. 1, the registration form must be completed, the original birth certificate must be supplied, proof of residency in at least two forms (tax statement, utility bill, purchase/rental agreement) as well as a residency affidavit, custody papers if applicable and payment of $25 to partially cover supply costs furnished by the school. Short term host family opportunities available through 4-H

Mahoning, Columbiana, Portage, and Trumbull County families will have the opportunity to welcome a young person from Japan into their home for one month this year, as part of an international exchange program being offered by the County OSU Extension, 4-H. Statewide, host families are needed for 100 Japanese youngsters (aged 12-18) and their adult chaperones, who will visit Ohio from July 23 through Aug. 18.

Host families provide the exchangees with room and board and a chance to experience daily life in America. Families are urged not to alter their daily routines or lifestyles during their visitor’s stay. Exchangees provide their own spending money, and the sponsoring organization furnishes comprehensive medical insurance. All types of families are welcome to apply to become hosts, including urban, rural, single-parent, childless, and non-4-H families. The only requirements are that for the Japanese month-long exchange, hosts must have a family member of the same gender and approximate age of the exchangee, three meals a day, and a separate bed for the visitor.
