2 city firefighters hurt fighting blaze

youngstown

Reports said firefighters Robert Rivera, 27, and Jeff Kaschak, 29, were treated for burns suffered while fighting a fire at a vacant 4214 Southern Blvd. building at about 6:40 p.m. Wednesday.

Crews arriving found heavy black smoke coming from the building, and high heat and heavy fire forced firefighters out of the building. A ladder truck was used to help put the fire out, reports said.

Reports said neighbors told firefighters renovations were taking place on the building.

Damage is listed at $10,000. The cause is under investigation.

Court certification

COLUMBUS

Mahoning County’s juvenile drug court was one of 30 specialized court dockets statewide to receive final certification from the Ohio Supreme Court after it was visited and evaluated against certification standards the state supreme court adopted in January, the top court announced.

Ohio’s courts have more than 150 specialized dockets that hold offenders accountable for their actions while emphasizing mental health, alcohol or drug treatment instead of incarceration.

Mahoning County’s juvenile drug court was the only specialized docket in Mahoning, Trumbull or Columbiana counties to receive final certification among the 30 certifications announced this week.
