UPDATED | Akron names Scarborough as 16th university president

The University of Akron has selected Scott L. Scarborough as its 16th president.

Scarborough currently is provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at The University of Toledo.

The announcement came just after 5:45 p.m. from UA’s Student Union Board Room. The school offered him an initial five-year term which will begin July 1. The base salary will be $450,000 and he'll also receive deferred compensation of $80,000 for housing.

UA did not select Jim Tressel, its own executive vice president for student success. Tressel is also a finalist for the Youngstown State University presidency, and YSU trustees have scheduled meetings for Friday morning and Monday evening.

Tressel is the former head football coach at both YSU and Ohio State University.

Scarborough was appointed to the Toledo provost position in 2012, he serves as the chief academic and operating officer in charge of the colleges of engineering; business; communication and the arts; language, literature and social sciences; natural sciences and mathematics; education; social justice and human service; law; graduate; honors; adult professionals; YouCollege; UTXnet World Campus; as well as the university’s libraries; enrollment and management; registrar’s office; university teaching center; and the division of student affairs.

YSU’s other two finalists are Gary L. Miller, chancellor at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, and Mary Cullinan, president of Southern Oregon University.

Miller is also a finalist in two other searches, president at State University of New York at Buffalo and chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.
