Seeds determined for sectional tennis play
Local players dominated the seedings as usual for next week’s Boardman Division II sectional boys tennis tournament. Two-time state qualifier Garrett Gardner of Poland is seeded first in singles with Lakeview’s Aaron Paczak, also a state qualifier in 2013, seeded second. Les Horvath of Ursuline is third and Anthony Ricciardi of Poland fourth.
In doubles, Warren JFK’s Tyler Cole and John Nader are seeded first, Cardinal Mooney’s Rich Hill and Andrew Stille are second followed by Lakeview’s Eric Rohrabaugh and Zach Teffner and JFK’s Billy Phillips and Caelan Phillips.
Boardman’s Donnie Barrett is seeded second in the Division I sectional at Canton and the Canfield doubles team of William Brown and Nicholas Debiec also is second. Action at Canton begins Tuesday next week.
Boardman’s Payne to play at Grove City
GROVE CITY, PA.
Boardman High football player James Payne III will continue his academic and athletic careers at Grove City College this fall. The 6-foot-4, 307-pound Payne will compete for a spot along the defensive line.
Flyers promote Hextall to general manager
PHILADELPHIA
Ron Hextall was promoted to general manager by the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday to replace Paul Holmgren, who was elevated to president. Hextall is Philadelphia’s all-time winningest goalie and served as assistant GM last year.
Derby winner returns to track for workout
LOUISVILLE, Ky.
California Chrome returned to the track for the first time since winning the Kentucky Derby last weekend. The chestnut colt jogged one mile at Churchill Downs on Wednesday under exercise rider Willie Delgado. Alan Sherman, who is overseeing California Chrome on behalf of his father and trainer Art Sherman, says the colt will resume galloping Thursday. He will travel to Baltimore early next week to prepare for the Preakness on May 17.
NCAA: Paterno family suit rewrites history

Joe Paterno’s relatives are attempting to rewrite history and ignore reality as they seek to overturn a $60 million fine and other NCAA sanctions against Penn State due to the Jerry Sandusky child sex-abuse scandal, NCAA attorneys said in asking a judge to dismiss a lawsuit filed by the late Penn State football coach’s family. The NCAA’s response was filed Tuesday in Centre County. Paterno’s family has sued to overturn the sanctions.
Buckeyes part of CBS doubleheader schedule
NEW YORK
Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio State and UCLA will compete in a basketball doubleheader in each of the next three seasons. The CBS Sports Classic will debut on Dec. 20 at the United Center in Chicago with North Carolina playing Ohio State and UCLA facing Kentucky. The doubleheader will be held at Barclays Center in New York on Dec. 19, 2015, and then at Las Vegas in December 2016.
