Castiglione hits 3 HRs as YSU softball rolls
Detroit
Sophomore Miranda Castiglione (Brampton, Ontario) broke the school’s single-game RBI record, tied the single-game home run record and broke the single-season runs scored record in leading the Youngstown State softball team to an 8-0 win over Detroit on Sunday. Castiglione belted a two-run home run to right-center field in the top of the first inning, a three-run shot to right-center in the top of the second and another two-run blast to right-center field in the top of the fourth inning to account for all but one of the runs scored by the Penguins (29-22, 11-8 Horizon).
Castiglione’s 43 runs this season breaks the 2010 record of 42 by Haley Thomas who now is tied with Castiglion for most homers in a game. The previous single-game RBI record was six, held by Thomas and three others.
The Penguins earned the No. 4 seed in the Horizon League tournament and will take on No. 5 Cleveland State Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at Dayton.
