Homer-happy YSU sweeps doubleheader
DETROIT
Youngstown State hit five home runs in game one and another in game two en route to a doubleheader sweep over Horizon League foe Detroit, 8-2, and 4-2, on Saturday at Buysse Ballpark.
Seniors Haley Knight and Samantha Snodgrass, sophomore Miranda Castiglione and freshmen Sarah Dowd and Maria Lacatena each went yard in game one for the Penguins (28-22, 10-8 Horizon League). Senior Sarah Ingalls, who went 4-for-8 on the day, hit a two-run home run in game two.
Detroit falls to 7-41 overall and 3-15 in the league.
In the opener, the Penguins cranked out 13 hits led by sophomore Katie Smallcomb’s 3 for 4 performance, and senior pitcher Casey Crozier notched her 17th win.
The Titans took a 2-0 lead after the first inning but Knight belted her first career home run — a two-run shot — in the top of the second inning to tie the game at 2-2.
Back-to-back home runs by Lacatena and Dowd in the top of the fourth gave the Penguins a 4-2 lead.
Snodgrass hit a two-out, two-run home run to left field that scored Smallcomb, who singled, and put the Penguins up, 6-2.
In the top of sixth, Castiglione drilled a two-run home run to right field.
In game two, Ingalls went 2 for 3 with a home run and an RBI-single to lead the Penguins offense.
Ingalls’ two-out single to left-center field in the top of the the first inning scored Dowd, who singled, with the game’s first run and give the Penguins a 1-0 lead.
Senior Courtney Ewing, who went 2 for 4, led off the top of the sixth with a double and Ingalls two-run blast to left-center field to make it 3-0.
The Penguins and Titans conclude the regular season with a single game at noon today.

Wright State outslugs Penguins once again
DAYTON
Kevin Hix singled, homered and drove in five runs, but Wright State built a big lead for the second straight day and held on again, this time for a 16-11 victory.
The Raiders (27-18, 20-2 Horizon League) led 16-4 after six innings. Jeff Limbaugh went 4 for 4 with two doubles and Michael Timm hit three doubles for Wright State.
The Raiders’ Joe Ford doubled twice and drove in three runs and Sean Murphy singled twice and hit a triple.
Phil Lipari and Lorenzo Arcuri each had two hits for the Penguins (10-30, 4-12).
The teams are scheduled to finish a three-game series at 1 p.m. today.
