Vietnam ammunition box forces lockdown at Fitch High Friday

AUSTINTOWN

An empty ammunition box from the Vietnam War led to a precautionary lockdown Friday at Austintown Fitch High School.

The security measure lasted about 20 minutes after it was confirmed that a sophomore student brought the box in to show to his teacher and class, Principal Chris Berni said. The sophomore class is learning about the war.

The student left the box in the lunchroom by accident, and police at the school enacted a lockdown until it was asssured it was empty, Berni said.

Berni sent out a call to parents and a district email about the lockdown. It ended about 12:30 p.m.
