Ammunition box leads to lockdown

An empty ammunition box from the Vietnam War led to a precautionary lockdown Friday at Austintown Fitch High School.

The security measure lasted about 20 minutes after it was confirmed that a sophomore student brought the box in to show to his teacher and class, Principal Chris Berni said. The sophomore class is learning about the war.

The student left the box in the lunchroom by accident, and police at the school enacted a lockdown until it was asssured it was empty, Berni said.

Berni sent out a call to parents and a district email about the lockdown. It ended about 12:30 p.m.

Warriors parade set for May 17

YOUNGSTOWN

The Warriors Inc. 10th annual “Unity in the Community” parade will take place at 10 a.m. May 17, starting at Market Street and Midlothian Boulevard and ending at the South Field House. Community day activities will follow the parade.

The organization still is accepting businesses, groups, agencies, organizations, politicians, council members and government and state agencies to walk and participate in the parade.

Participants also are needed for the community day activities. Dancers, singers, musicians, bands, comedy and poetry are being sought.

Closing sale at Hungarian Club

The Youngstown American Hungarian Club, 2219 Donald Ave., will have a closing sale from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 17 and 18 for all kitchen supplies such as mixers, pots, pans, dishes and silverware as well as all yard equipment, outdoor picnic tables and two large buffet tables. A cimbalom, a Hungarian instrument, also is up for sale.

Block watch

YOUNGSTOWN

The Bryn Mawr (East Side) Block Watch will have its monthly meeting and introduction of new officers at 5 p.m. Tuesday at McGuffey Centre, 1649 Jacobs Road. The meeting theme is “Caring Community” and is open to the public.

Man shot in hand

WARREN

A 35-year-old Southern Boulevard Northwest man was shot in the hand at 1:05 a.m. Friday during a struggle with a man who attempted to rob him in the stairwell of his Avon Oaks apartment.

The victim said he was arriving home and walking to the entrance of the apartment when a male wearing a mask confronted him and demanded his belongings as they entered the stairwell.

The two struggled, with the suspect firing several gunshots, one of them striking the victim in the hand, the victim said. The victim said he struck the suspect with his fist, knocking the gun away.

The victim then picked up the gun and attempted to fire at the suspect, but the suspect ran away, he said.

Food drive planned

YOUNGSTOWN

The National Association of Letter Carriers will have its annual “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive next Saturday. During the drive, participants simply leave a nonperishable food donation in a bag by their mailbox, and letter carriers will pick them up and deliver them to a local food bank.

Locally, the Youngstown Community Gleaners Food Bank, 94 Pyatt St., will host a kickoff event for the food drive at 11 a.m. Friday.
