Canfield High School had its annual National Honor Society Induction Ceremony April 24, during which 48 students were honored by the society.
Students inducted into the society included Kyle Anderson, Bisshoy Anwar, Mia Battaglia, Andrea Beck, Jordan Bleggi, Emily Burton, Annie Carbon, Taylor Catri-Eakes, Gianna D’Apolito, Matt DeSanto, Jacob Duda, Stephen Gant, Amy Goddard, Sarah Heaven, Darby Hepola, Cooper Johnson, Abbey Karlock, Sumeet Kaur, Alyssa Kerensky, Emma Kilbreath, Matthew Lawson, Vincent Leone, Paige Lepowsky, Kerra Loomis, Kailey Love, Sophia Mancini, Cameron Maras, Julia Meissner, Sydney Miller, Matthew Milstead, Jonathan Palermo, Janie Rafoth, Rachel Rafoth, Sam Ranttila, Stephanie Rivera, Tara Rogers, Maleck Saleh, Natalie Schoenfeld, Nagmita Shrestha, Angelina Sorice, Andrea Stanic, Rachel Tinkey, Cailan Toohey, Carly Trefethern, Jaedon Tseng, Luke Whittenberger, Sarah Wyand and Alexandra Zoldan.
The student inductees were escorted by their parents into the auditorium and each student was introduced to an auditorium filled with fellow students, friends and family.
As the students were introduced, Canfield High School National Honor Society co-advisers Tim Wensel and Steve Pitts greeted them and presented them with the National Honor Society gold medal, which was placed around their neck.
Students then crossed the stage and signed the membership book.
Current senior members of the society spoke on the four Pillars of the National Honor Society. Chris Halley spoke on Character, Arjun Subramanyam spoke on Scholarship, Sara Lytle spoke on Leadership and Andrea Pupino spoke on Service.
“The definition of scholarship is the relentless pursuit of knowledge. This is what makes you successful. You will succeed,” Subramanyam told the inductees during his speech, after which he lit the candle for character.
“Service is serving the community which has helped shape our own lives. There is an endless variety of ways to serve. It is not limited to certain times,” Pupino said as she addressed the audience while speaking on the pillar of service.
Charles L. Howell, dean of Youngstown State University’s Beeghly College of Education, was the guest speaker for the ceremony.
Howell focused on the pillar of character.
“I care about character because it is my responsibility, as Dean, to train teachers. It is important that these teachers and student teachers are people of character. Our character is shaped partly by the people close to us and partly by the decisions we make. Yes, there are challenges ahead and yes, you have the resources to meet them,” Howell told the students.
Tommy Warg was presented with the Leadership and Service Award, with more than 300 service hours with such organizations as Golden String, for which he helped raise $730.
The new inductees were then led in the National Honor Society Pledge for Membership, after which they received a standing ovation from their parents, grandparents, friends and teachers.
Wensel recognized parents, grandparents, special friends, teachers and administrators who helped the students throughout their school years. He also thanked the current senior members for their hard work.
After the ceremony, inductees and guests enjoyed a reception in the cafeteria which included cookies, fresh fruit, pastries, punch and coffee.
