Boardman boys defeat Massillon Jackson


The Boardman Boys track team improved its 2014 Federal League record to 2-1 and overall record to 3-1 with a 76-61 victory over the Massillon Jackson Polar Bears.

The initial event that the Spartans scored in was the 110-meter hurdles with senior Jeff Bean taking first with a time of 15.36. In the 100-meter dash, senior Turel Thompson placed second with a time of 11.21 seconds, he was followed by senior Ivan Adu-Poku in third in 11.55. The Spartans also won the 4x200 meter relay with the team of Thompson, freshman Sheldon Broyles, sophomore Brendan Lucas and senior Brian Bodrick in a time of 1:36.93.

Senior Alan Burns placed first in the 1600 at 4:25. The 4x100 meter relay team of Broyles, Bodrick, Thompson and sophomore AJ Pantaleo won the event in 46.67 seconds.

Lucas placed first in the 400 at 52.18 he was followed by junior Josh Suarez in third place at 54.44.

In the 300 hurdles, Pantaleo was first and Bean second in times of 43.4 and 43.9 seconds. Burns was second in the 800 at 2:01, and Bodrick and Lucas placed first and second in the 200 at 23.27 and 23.36, respectively. Senior Justin Maroni placed first in the 3200 in a time of 10:10 and Burns was second in a time of 10:15.

“We got some absolutely huge performances out of a lot of guys tonight - Justin Maroni, Alan Burns, AJ Pantaleo, Jeff Bean, Turel Thompson, Brian Bodrick, Brendan Lucas, Josh Suarez and many others. I could go on and on. All our guys really displayed a lot of heart and tons of effort tonight against a very good Jackson team,” said Phillips.

The success continued in the field events where in the high jump Bean placed first at 5 feet 8 inches and freshman Richard Fisher tied for second place at 5 feet 6 inches. The long jump saw Thompson take first at 18 feet 5 inches. Senior Sean Lonardo was third in the shot put at 43 feet 6 inches and senior Mike Sferra was second in the discus at 124 feet 10 inches. Senior Steve Brown was second in the pole vault at 11 feet 6 inches.

“This was a total team effort, I am so proud of these guys and our coaching staff for getting this victory tonight. We now have the opportunity to still win the league,” said Phillips.
