2 die in Dayton fire

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — A southwest Ohio woman says she narrowly escaped a house fire that killed another woman and a teenager.

Officials said the accidental fire at a Dayton duplex Thursday morning involved smoking and nonworking smoke detectors.

Tana Stewart tells The Dayton Daily News that part of her wishes she died, too, in the blaze that killed her fiancee, 37-year-old Tia Strickland, and Strickland’s 15-year-old son Ricky Turner.

Dayton Assistant Fire Chief Michael Caudill said Strickland and Turner likely died of smoke inhalation, but the coroner has yet to rule on the cause of death.

The fire started in the middle room of the main floor of the duplex. Caudill said smoking likely was the cause, but he declined to say who might have been smoking.
