Firefighters battled blazes at two vacant South Side homes early Wednesday.

Crews called to 2717 Tampa Ave. about 3:05 a.m. found heavy smoke coming from the second floor of the home. Reports said it appeared the fire started in a first-floor bedroom and spread to the second floor. A back door also was open, reports said. Damage is listed at $15,000.

At 6:05 a.m. firefighters were called to a 528 Pasadena Ave. home where a fire was found on the first floor. Damage there is listed at $7,000.

There were no injuries. Both fires are under investigation.

Marijuana plants

Police reports said U.S. marshals serving an arrest warrant Tuesday morning at a home in the 100 block of South Portland Avenue on the West Side found 17 marijuana plants in various stages of growth.

Police cited David Leaghty, 30, on a misdemeanor charge of illegal cultivation of marijuana. Reports said he opened the door for officers, and they found the plants after a search of the home for the person theysought.

Some of the plants were up to 3 feet tall, reports said. Police also found two grow lamps and two scales, reports said.

Suspect extradited

A man wanted on an attempted-murder warrant who police say fled to Georgia is back in town.

Dashonti Baker, 22, is in the Mahoning County jail where he was returned Tuesday after being extradited from Georgia, where he was found by U.S. marshals several days ago.

Baker is charged with attempted murder in the March 15 shooting of Jaquez Brown in a parking lot at South and East Dewey avenues on the South Side. Brown was shot in the head. Baker already has been indicted by a grand jury and was arraigned Wednesday in municipal court. His bond was set at $500,000.

Boathouses to open

YOUNGSTOWN

Mill Creek Park’s boathouses at lakes Glacier and Newport will be open from 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays in May for the rental of kayaks and pedal boats. The Lake Glacier boathouse is on Price Road. The Lake Newport boat-rental facility is on West Newport Drive. The park’s Lanterman’s Mill will expand its hours to 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays in May, with a $1 admission fee for Mahoning County residents; $2 for nonresidents. The fees are 75 cents for students and seniors; and children 6 and under are admitted free.

Health fair set

Agape Assembly Church, 426 Nevada Ave. SW, is offering the “Power to End Stroke” Community Health Fair from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday. The free event has presentations from medical professionals, free health screenings, tips for recognizing and responding to signs of stroke, prize giveaways, and activities for children.
