Teen sentenced in Ohio boredom beating case

CINCINNATI (AP) — The last of six Ohio teens police said severely beat a man because they were bored has been sentenced to probation.

A juvenile court judge in Cincinnati today also ordered the youth to undergo a mental health diagnostic program.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports the judge called the beating “horrible” and “brutal,” but said the court is supposed to try to rehabilitate children.

The boys attacked Pat Mahaney in August 2012 in suburban North College Hill. They were 13 and 14 at the time.

The 46-year-old Mahaney died the next year; a coroner ruled that his death wasn’t caused by the beating.

The other five boys were sentenced to probation or various periods of confinement in juvenile facilities.

The Associated Press isn’t naming them because of their ages.
