Child immunizations

Niles City Health Department, 34 W. State St., is offering child immunization clinics from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday and April 16. No appointment is necessary, and no one will be refused for inability to pay. Parents must bring their child’s immunization records, and children should be feeling well with no illness, fever or rash. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Homes For Kids/Child and Family Solutions in Niles will have its 4th Annual “Cheers to the Children” wine and beer tasting from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Mahoning Country Club, 710 E. Liberty St. More than 20 wines and hand-crafted brews from Chalet Debonne, Grand River Cellars, Luva Bella Winery, Mastropietro Winery, Cellar Rats Brewery, Rust Belt Brewing Co. and Superior Beverage Co. can be sampled. Tickets are $40 per person or $75 per couple and can be purchased online at www.hfk.org or at the door. Homes For Kids/Child and Family Solutions provides treatment foster care to children in the foster-care system, many of whom have been emotionally, physically, or sexually abused.

Friday night break-in

YOUNGSTOWN

Police reports say two men broke into a home in the 300 block of East Florida Avenue about 7 p.m. Friday through a second-story window.

Police called to the home saw an upstairs bedroom ransacked. A teenager in the home told police he got home and heard someone upstairs, and it sounded as if they were climbing through a window. The teen went upstairs and saw two men in his backyard running, reports said. Reports also said it appeared nothing was taken.

2 intruders caught

NORTH BEAVER, Pa.

Two people were arrested after a home invasion and shooting at a Hillsville-Bessemer Road home about 1:15 a.m. Friday. Pennsylvania State Police at New Castle said Richard Javens, 43, and Michael Waters, 23, both of McClelland Avenue in New Castle, and a third person were armed when they burst into the home and exchanged gunfire with the homeowner. Javens was shot in the chest with a shotgun and taken first to Jameson Memorial Hospital, then UPMC Medical Center in Pittsburgh. Waters is in the Lawrence County jail on $100,000 bond after being arraigned. Javens also faces several charges. The third person is still at large. The homeowner was treated for cuts and bruises, state police said.

Cookie decorating

A cookie-decorating event at the Rich Center for Autism, Fedor Hall, Youngstown State University, is set for 10 a.m. Monday.

Students will decorate Panera Bread shortbread cookies in preparation for the Panera Bread Puzzle Piece Cookie Sale in honor of Autism Awareness Month in April.

OSHP school visit

LISBON

Personnel from the Lisbon post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol will visit Knox Elementary School, 2900 Knox School Road, Alliance, at 10 a.m. Tuesday to thank the students, school staff and Knox Township Trustee Gregory Carver for supporting the seat-belt law. Carver and the students at Knox Elementary prepared several posters with personalized safety messages encouraging drivers to “BUCKLE UP.”

Citizen academy

Applications are being accepted for the Warren Police Department’s Citizen’s Police Awareness Academy Training. The next class will take place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. April 16 in the Roll Call Room at Warren Police Department. Residents can obtain an application from the city’s website (www.warren.org) or by visitng the Warren Police Records Department, 141 South St., from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. During the seven-week course, residents are given an overview of police policies and procedures, tour of the county jail, police ride-along, training on use of deadly force in a “shoot, not shoot” simulated scenario, remarks by Warren’s administration and police chief and presentations by the city prosecutor’s office. The U.S. Department of Justice Warren Weed & Seed program provided the initial funding and format for the academy.
