The Appalachian Regional Commission awarded $125,000 to Mahoning County for a McCartney Road sanitary-sewer extension on the city’s East Side.

The county plans to construct 2,711 linear feet of 8-inch sewer lines along U.S. Route 422 to increase the capacity of the sewer system by 1.26 million gallons a day, said U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, a Democrat from Cleveland.

“This is excellent news for the Mahoning Valley,” Brown said in a statement Friday. “This federal investment in the city’s infrastructure will lead to more jobs and more-efficient operations for local businesses. Projects like this help boost the economy and make Youngstown a more competitive city.”

The project will benefit a local industrial-painting company and will allow Iron and String Life Enhancement Inc. to expand, creating 15 new jobs and generating $700,000 in leveraged private investments, Brown said. ISLE is a disability services organization that provides residential, respite, transportation, advocacy, and vocational services.

ARC is a federal-state partnership focused on economic development in the 13 Appalachian states.

In addition to ARC’s $125,000 grant, the state will provide $287,000 to complete the project, and local sources will contribute $187,040.
