Chief of security at WTC resigns
NEW YORK
A spokesman for the New York City company that manages 1 World Trade Center says its head of security has resigned.
David Velazquez’s resignation Friday comes just days after three skydiving enthusiasts, who parachuted off the nation’s tallest skyscraper in September, were arrested. It also comes almost two weeks after authorities say a New Jersey teenager was able to sneak onto the site, climb to the top of the 1,776-foot tower and take pictures.
Spokesman Jordan Barowitz said The Durst Organization took over security of the tower in January. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey controls the site and is responsible for security around the perimeter.
Velazquez couldn’t immediately be reached to comment. The New York Post first reported his departure.
Girl talks to pope, then dad is freed
LOS ANGELES
After a 10-year-old California girl traveled to the Vatican to plead with Pope Francis for help as her father faced deportation, the man was released Friday on bond from immigration detention.
Mario Vargas was freed from a detention facility in Louisiana after he posted $5,000 bond. A relative who saw the girl on television pleading with the pope during a public audience helped with the funding, said his wife, Lola Vargas.
Vargas’ release came after his daughter Jersey, of Panorama City, Calif., addressed the pope this week as part of a California delegation that traveled to urge the Vatican to prod President Barack Obama on immigration reform.
Woman arrested in husband’s death
CINCINNATI
A Northeast Ohio woman whose husband died after authorities say he unwittingly ingested a drink spiked with antifreeze was arrested Friday on a murder charge.
Teresa Kotomski was taken into custody at her Conneaut home by the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Office after a grand jury indicted her earlier this week.
Investigators say new information led to the 53-year-old woman’s arrest in the poisoning death in 2009 of her husband, Raymond Kotomski, but they declined to be specific or discuss a possible motive.
