AUSTINTOWN

A person lost thousands of dollars after a scam claimed to be the Internal Revenue Service.

Austintown police said a resident of Winterpark Avenue reported on Thursday losing $7,674 after being contacted by someone claiming to be with the IRS.

The scam claimed the resident owed back taxes and needed to get a cash card from a store to pay the balance.

However, authorities said the IRS doesn't accept card payments.
