Missing Ohio student may have committed suicide

ATHENS, Ohio (AP) — Police in southeast Ohio say they have reason to believe that a missing Ohio University student may have committed suicide in a river that runs through campus.

A release from Athens County Crime Solvers Anonymous says 21-year-old Sam Wiater may have indicated to his mother and girlfriend that he planned to end his life in the Hocking River. He’s been missing more than two weeks.

The Athens Messenger reports that while Wiater’s car was found near the river, an infrared search of the river and nearby area failed to turn up any evidence. Dive teams and sonar also could not find him.

Athens Police Chief Tom Pyle tells the newspaper that it’s still a missing-persons case.
