Megan Sefcik Basketball, Austintown Fitch
If Austintown Fitch senior Megan Sefcik isn’t slashing through the paint, or feeding an open teammate, you can often find her standing at the free throw line going through her standard routine.
Dribble, dribble, dribble ... pause ... swish.
She shot a staggering 89 percent from the foul line, to go along with 53 percent from the floor, as she led the Falcons to a 21-2 record this season.
“Back in the sixth grade, our five seniors were playing together,” Sefcik said. “So for us to be able to leave Fitch with the legacy that we [did] was definitely a huge accomplishment.”
The Falcons lost to Canfield, 53-45, in the sectional final of the Division I state tournament — Sefcik’s last game in a Fitch uniform. But after a season like they had, it’s safe to say the senior class left the girls basketball program in good hands.
“It means a lot,” Sefcik said. “Look back a few years ago, I mean we really didn’t have the support that we do now and just to be able to turn the program around and have people follow us and keep up with us really meant a lot.”
The 5-foot-9 guard, who averaged just shy of 20 points per game to go along with 6.3 rebounds five assists, four steals, and two blocks, will have a new legacy to create at the University of Akron beginning next year. She’s committed there to play Division I basketball, but Sefcik has her eye on a basketball career beyond college. She plans to study early childhood education with a possible future in coaching.
“That’s always in the back of my head,” Sefcik said. “Especially with being a teacher. It’s a perfect setup.”
