Mancini-Kim contract set for online auction

An original contract from Ray “Boom-Boom” Mancini’s fateful fight against South Korean Duk-Koo Kim will be auctioned by Nate D. Sanders on Thursday. Interested bidders may participate in the auction online.

Mancini signed the contract on Sept. 16, 1982, for the lightweight championship bout in at Las Vegas against Kim. Mancini won by a TKO in the 14th round. Kim slipped into a coma after the fight and died four days later in a Las Vegas hospital.

Larson wins Nationwide race, holds off Harvick

FONTANA, Calif.

Kyle Larson won his first Nationwide Series race Saturday, holding off Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch in a thrilling finish at Fontana. The 21-year-old Larson became the first California native to win a Nationwide race at the 2-mile oval, surviving a three-man derby in the final laps that had the fans on their feet.

One of NASCAR’s most promising young drivers, Larson, from Elk Grove, Calif., near Sacramento, was named Nationwide’s top rookie last season.

Della Valle leaves OSU to play in Europe

Ohio State coach Thad Matta has announced that sophomore guard Amedeo Della Valle is leaving the team to play professional ball in Europe. Della Valle, from Alba, Italy, notified the Buckeyes staff of his decision on Saturday. Della Valle averaged 3.6 points a game over two seasons at OSU.

Crew wins first two of season for first time

Columbus Crew midfielder Bernardo Anor said his first goal off a set piece was one that had been run over and over again in practice. His second wasn’t the kind that can be duplicated in training. Anor’s brilliant 35-yard strike at the end of the first half proved to be the difference in Columbus’ 2-1 victory over the Philadelphia Union Saturday in the Crew’s home opener.

Columbus won the first two games of the season for the first time in its 19-year history.
