Woman explains why she fled

YOUNGSTOWN

A woman who fled from police in her car Thursday evening told officers after she was stopped that she did not pull over because she was afraid of going to jail.

Officers on their way to a call in the 3400 block of Hudson Avenue on the South Side about 8:45 p.m. spotted a car driven by 58-year-old Catherine Cline of West Boardman Street weaving in and out of traffic at a high rate of speed. When police tried to pull the car over, the vehicle instead accelerated, reports said.

The car almost lost control making a left turn onto West Myrtle Avenue and was stopped there. Cline was arrested on a charge of failure to comply with the order of a police officer and taken to the Mahoning County jail.

Man files appeal

YOUNGSTOWN (AP)

An Ohio man is appealing a five-year prison term for participating in the enslavement of a mentally disabled woman held for two years with her young child in Northeast Ohio.

Daniel Brown pleaded guilty last year to a single conspiracy charge and agreed to cooperate with the investigation. He was sentenced by Judge Benita Pearson in federal court here earlier this month.

On Friday, Brown appealed the sentence to the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati. His attorney, Russell Bensing, says federal guidelines called for a sentence in the range of 21/2 to 31/2 years.

Bensing says he’ll argue that Judge Pearson handed down a stiffer sentence than she should have.

Brown was the first of four people convicted in the case to be sentenced.
