Books as resources

The Rev. Carolyn Griffeth, interim pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Youngstown, is leading a Lenten Bible study. She suggested three books relating to the subject.

“Give Up Something Bad for Lent” by James Moore: During Lent, Christians may give up something as an act of sacrifice and spiritual discipline. The author challenges readers to give up something spiritually that they would be better off not doing. He suggests eliminating a destructive habit or attitude such as envy, self-pity, apathy, procrastination, gossip, resentment or negative thinking. The book offers seven sessions, one for each Sunday in Lent and Easter Sunday. Each session features a Scripture reference, a reading and questions for personal reflection.

“Forgiveness, A Lenten Study” by Marjorie J. Thompson: Forgiving others and asking for forgiveness are central disciplines for Christians. Lent is the time to broaden understanding and practice of forgiveness.

“Hard to Dance with the Devil on Your Back” by Ray Buckley: The seven-session Lenten study examines the struggle in the lives of believers and reminds readers of the struggles of Jesus and the disciples. Each session includes a Scripture reference, a reading, questions for reflection and a prayer.
