Twenty years ago, Jenny Vheng arrived in the United States from China and she’s beginning to realize the American Dream.
After opening her first Sweet Frosty frozen yogurt shop last May in Martinsburg, W.Va., she and her partners opened their second location March 1 at 215 Boardman Canfield Road in Boardman.
The 1,700-square-foot facility features 12 flavors of self-serve frozen yogurt – cake batter, red velvet cake, outrageous orange, Irish mint, cookies n’ cream, peanut butter, green apple, mango tango, very strawberry, New York cheesecake, alpine vanilla and chocolate classic that can be added on to with a variety of fresh fruit and candy toppings. In addition, Sweet Frosty also serves unique bubble tea drinks and yogurt smoothies, plus yogurt cakes, and regular cakes and pies.
Vheng said every week she will be changing up a couple of the yogurt flavors.
“We’re the first in town that serves bubble tea,” she said. “You can choose green tea or red tea. We add fruit flavor to it. Passion fruit’s been very popular. The tea mixes with the tapioca on the bottom. It’s very good in the spring and summer time.”
Vheng first lived in Albany, N.Y., after arriving in America. She has lived in Youngstown for the past 10 years and said the idea for Sweet Frosty came from her and her partners.
“I always dreamed to have my own shop,” she said. “I think the yogurt is better because it’s healthier than ice cream. I’ve partnered with friends from YSU [Chris Lim, Teresa Luklan and Devin Patrick]. They always said, ‘let’s do something new and something healthy.’ This is what a lot of people are looking for.
“At first, we were thinking of a tea shop; selling all different kinds of tea and tea sets.”
Vheng added that a trip to California and seeing how popular frozen yogurt shops were gave her even more impetus to open her own business.
Offering 50 percent off yogurt the first day, Vheng said the opening went very well.
“It’s been smooth and it’s good,” she said. “We had a couple crowds. We haven’t done any advertising yet because we want to see how it goes.”
Sweet Frosty is open Monday through Saturday from 12-9 and Sunday from 12-8.
